The Woodland Hills girls' basketball team changed history last night -- they finally won a game at Oakland Catholic.
In the opening night of WPIAL section play, Woodland Hills (3-1, 1-0) pulled off a 50-48 victory at Class AAAA Section 2 foe Oakland Catholic (1-2, 0-1).
Oakland Catholic has been open since the 1989-90 school year, and it was the first time they've lost on their home floor to Woodland Hills.
Oakland Catholic came into the game as the Post-Gazette's No. 2-ranked Class AAAA team while Woodland Hills was ranked No. 4.
Jamie Smith led the Wolverines with 23 points before fouling out with 2:30 left. Colleen Kiss led the Eagles with 22 points in a game in which her team scored no points in the final 1:46. The Eagles also committed 35 turnovers.
Woodland Hills had a decided edge at the free-throw line, going 17 for 30, while the Eagles went just 7 of 8.
"This is a great win for our program," Woodland Hills coach Korie Morton-Rozier said. "The credit goes to our defense. They picked it up in the second half."
Woodland Hills picked it up particularly in the fourth quarter, limiting the Eagles to 8 points in that span.
Alex Gensler scored 34 points and Meghan McLean had 25 to lead Class AAAA No. 1 Upper St. Clair (5-0, 1-0) to an 81-68 win against visiting Baldwin (3-1, 0-1) in Section 4. The Panthers came out of the gate slow, scoring just seven first quarter points, but then they got on track, scoring 25, 26 and 23 in the final three quarters.
Class AA No. 4 Ford City (2-2, 0-1) was an upset victim, dropping a 51-45 decision in Section 1 against host Jeannette (1-2, 1-0). Kayla Cook led the Jayhawks with 14 points.
Burrell (4-0, 1-0) remained unbeaten with a 49-37 victory in Class AAA Section 1 against visiting Mars (3-2, 0-1). Taylor Myers led the Bucs with a double-double, scoring 18 points and snaring 11 rebounds.
Mt. Lebanon (5-0, 1-0) cruised to an easy 69-29 win against host Peters Township (3-1, 0-1) in Class AAAA Section 4. Emily Miller led the Blue Devils with 18 points.
Kristen Iovino roared to 34 points as she led Franklin Regional (4-1) to a 52-40 win against host Belle Vernon (1-2) in a Class AAA non-section showdown.
Darche' Jackson poured in 31 points to lead Wilkinsburg (1-2, 1-0) in a 56-42 Class AA Section 4 win against host Riverview (1-3, 0-1).
In a lopsided, 76-8 win for Avonworth (4-1, 1-0) against visiting Leechburg (0-4, 0-1) in Class A Section 4, Morgan Locher led the Lady Lopes with 14 points. That effort pushed her over the 1,000-career point barrier to 1,009.

Blackhawk senior boys' basketball player Antoine Childs made a verbal commitment to play at New Jersey Institute of Technology. A 6-foot-5 forward, Childs averaged 22 points per game as a junior and will head to NJIT, a school in its second season competing in Division I as an independent.
