Tuned In Journal: Book 'em, 'Heroes'

We know she dies, but we don't know how hard Hiro tried to save Charlie until the new "Heroe" book tells all.

If last night's finale-for-now of NBC's "Heroes" left you bereft of all things heroic, fear not, there's more "Heroes" to be had... at your local book store.

"Heroes: Saving Charlie" ($24, Del Ray Hardcover) delves into the six months time traveler Hiro (Masi Oka) spent with cute waitress Charlie (Jayma Mays) before Sylar (Pittsburgh native Zachary Quinto) munched her brain. Viewers only saw brief glimpses of how Hiro and Charlie lived in those six months, but this new book by author Aury Wallington, who's written for "Sex and the City" and "Veronica Mars," purports to give fans "the depth and insight that only a novel will allow," according to the publisher.

"Saving Charlie" just landed on my desk yesterday, so I can't vouche for that (odds are I'll never have time to read the whole thing anyway), but at least this TV tie-in was put together with the full cooperation of the show's writers. Writer Jeff Loeb even gets a "story by" credit on the title page.

One oddity: The book's release date is Dec. 26. You'd think they'd want it in stores sooner so "Heroes" fans could give it to other "Heroes" fans as a Christmas gift. (A publicist for the publisher says the book is not embargoed and may turn up in stores before its official publication date.)

CBS is more on the ball, re-launching its online CBS store this week. Fans can buy an "Amazing Race" oval mouse pad ($10) or a "CSI" triple logo three piece shot glass set ($19.95), among other trinkets for sale.

While doing research for this post I came upon news that made me far more excited than it should have: A new "V" book will be published next year! My guess is this is a novelization of the aborted NBC mini-series re-boot from a few years ago. I'll definitely try to get an interview with author/series creator Kenneth Johnson for Tuned In Journal.
