PIAA Class AAAA: Sunseri lifts Central into football semifinals
Throws for career-high 298 yards in romp

ERIE -- He was equal parts effortless and flawless.

A deep route here, a middle screen there and a frozen rope out-route for good measure. Simply put, Central Catholic senior quarterback Tino Sunseri did it all last night and made it look so easy against a grossly overmatched District 10 champion.

Behind Sunseri, who finished 11 of 15 for a career high 298 yards and threw for two touchdowns, Central Catholic rambled past Erie Cathedral Prep, 44-6 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

With the victory, Central Catholic (14-0) advances to the PIAA Class AAAA semifinals next week where the Vikings will face the winner of the game today between Governor Mifflin and Harrisburg.

The win was the second for Central Catholic against Cathedral Prep (9-3) this season, complementing a 49-21 decision in Week 2.

"You really couldn't ask for much more than what he did tonight," Central Catholic coach Terry Totten said of Sunseri. "He did exactly what we wanted out of him."

Sunseri was the ever-twisting stir in Central Catholic's drink.

"My coaches and my offensive line put me in a great spot to where I could sit back and make some throws, all I had to do was throw the football to the open guy," said Sunseri, who left with just over 5 minutes to go with a slight ankle injury he insisted was nothing to worry about.

The minor pain in Sunseri's ankle was the biggest concern Central Catholic had last night.

For as frigid as the biting chill off the lake was, Sunseri couldn't have been more opposite, he couldn't have been hotter out of the gate, throwing for 199 yards in the first half.

The teeth of a skin-reddening crosswind and a Ramblers secondary that seemed more than puzzled were no match for Sunseri as he went 4 for 4, threw a touchdown pass and accumulated 170 yards passing in the first quarter. On the first play, Sunseri threw deep to a wide open Jeff Knox for 46 yards.

That put the ball on the Cathedral; Prep 10, and fullback Dan Vaughan finished things, going five yards to make it 7-0 just 1:11 into the game.

"That was huge," Cathedral Prep coach Don Holl said. "We thought we would kick it off, and, because of that wind, have them pinned back and make them work for some yards. That didn't happen."

The Vikings -- and more precisely Sunseri's right arm -- advanced the lead to 14-0 late in the quarter when tight end Quentin Williams reeled in a wide-open pass in the middle and scrammed in from 30 yards.

The lead ballooned to 21-0 early in the second quarter, when running back Andrew Taglianetti zig-zagged through the Ramblers' secondary for a 30-yard touchdown.

In the second half, Matt Oczypok added a 24-yard field goal, Sunseri and Jeff Knox rushed for touchdowns and Brian Friend caught a 46-yard scoring strike.

Cathedral Prep's Akeem Satterfield roared down the sideline in the third quarter for a 65-yard touchdown for the Ramblers' lone moment of offensive potency, but, at that time, the game was well in hand.

It got that way because of a Central Catholic arsenal that saw six players reach the end zone.

"That's what we've hung our hat on all year, that different people are going to step up and make plays" Sunseri said.
