Top 10 story lines for high school basketball season in the WPIAL and City League.
1. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk: With Terrelle Pryor leading the way, the Jeannette Jayhawks are the favorite to win the PIAA Class AA football title. With Pryor leading the way, the basketball Jayhawks are expected to have a big season. Could it be a double take on football and basketball championships?
2. Saying goodbye? Schenley High School might close after this school year -- only one year after winning a PIAA basketball title. The Spartans lost some star players to graduation and have a new coach (Kevin Reid). Do they have enough to win a third consecutive boys' City League title?
3. Oh, baby: Never mind playoff berths. Two of the top girls' basketball coaches in the WPIAL might miss a little bit of time this year because of childbirth. North Catholic's Molly Rottman is due in four weeks. Mt. Lebanon's Dori Anderson-Oldaker is due in mid-February, right in the thick of the WPIAL playoffs.
4. Tiger paws: The McKeesport Tigers are the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked Class AAAA boys' team in the WPIAL. Exactly how good is 6-11 1/2 junior Zeke Marshall? He was a reserve last year but already has a scholarship offer from Pitt.
5. A walk in the Park: How long will it take before Lincoln Park has an impact in WPIAL Class A boys? This is the first year in the WPIAL for the charter school in Beaver County. The team will play their games in the old Midland gymnasium, where some legends played in the 1960s and '70s.
6. Watching Walker: Will Schenley's Markel Walker be the next big-time girls' player from the district? The younger sister of Pitt player Mercedes Walker, Markel is a 6-2 guard-forward and ranked by at least one scouting service among the top 20 juniors in the country. She transferred to Schenley from a Philadelphia school.
7. Is there no place like home? Mike Mastroianni won a WPIAL Class AAAA boys' championship last season and was selected the Post-Gazette Coach of the Year. But Mastroianni left Bethel Park and is now coaching at his alma mater, Quaker Valley.
8. From the Rox: The last game Bill Minear coached in boys' basketball, he won a PIAA championship at Sto-Rox. In eight season with the "Rox," he won 155 games and two WPIAL titles. After a three-year hiatus, he is now Ambridge's boys' coach.
9. New king at the Castle: Highly successful coach John Sarandrea retired at New Castle after winning four WPIAL titles and compiling a 304-109 record in 15 seasons. Don't be surprised if New Castle continues its winning ways under new coach Mark Stanley, who came over from Union.
10. Sophomore watch: How good are Sewickley Academy sophomore point guard Tom Droney and Chartiers Valley sophomore guard T.J. McConnell? Droney already is getting interest from Pitt, Notre Dame and Ohio State and has a scholarship offer from Duquesne. McConnell recently accepted a scholarship offer from Duquesne.
