A plan to revitalize the Library Corridor and to create a town center for South Park continues to be reviewed by township officials.
Mullin & Lonergan Associates was hired 18 months ago by the township to study the area and make recommendations. The Pittsburgh firm's findings will be soon be available for the public and a hearing will be held for residents to offer opinions and ask questions.
The study, funded by the township, state and county, focused on the commercial corridor, which starts at Oscars Auto Sales on Brownsville Road and ends at St. Joan of Arc Church on Library Road.
This area encompasses the Port Authority park-n-ride station at the end of its Library light rail line, as well as a number of old storefronts and vacant buildings. The area has been in decline for more than a quarter century.
It is estimated that such a renovation would cost about $9 million from public and private funds. At least $1 million would go for traffic improvements at the intersection of Brownsville and Library roads. A Montour Trail enhancement, estimated to cost $700,000, would connect to the trail from Brownsville Road.
