Tuned In Journal: TV to be thankful for

Never fear, there will be plenty of leftover turkey(s) in Friday's Tuned In column, but for today, here's a look at things in local TV that some viewers may be thankful for:

WTAE: Channel 4's new set looks beautiful and the station's investigations remain the best on TV locally.

WPXI: Channel 11 moved into a new home with a sleek new news set. After suffering through countless technical glitches, viewers may finally come to appreciate the new technology. Whether or not it was worth the cost to the station's reputation is another question.

In celebrating its 50th anniversary, WPXI has treated Pittsburgh viewers, who love their local history, to two good specials about the entertainment and news programming on Channel 11 over the last 50 years. Though I could have done without more chest-thumping about Channel 11's new facility, i was impressed that this past weekend's news special acknowledged former WPXI talent with clips of Jennifer Antkowiak and Dennis Bowman.

KDKA: No new set for KDKA, which has left some viewers grumbling, but the station deserves props for its slick "Your Home" promos featuring catchy home grown tunes.

For a humorous trip down KDKA memory lane, read this remembrance by former KDer Arthur Greenwald (registration on the site required).

WQED: While WQED's new slogan -- "WQED changes lives " -- may be easy to mock, the station does have an impact, patricularly through its education programs. I'm just not sure the community knows enough about these programs to appreciate the slogan. WQED could also make an impact by offering media criticism or efforts to educate viewers on the need for media literacy, especially among parents. You know the commercial stations won't do it, so why not WQED?

Veteran reporters: It's great to have veterans in town who know their beats, know the city and are happy to be here. They don't look at Pittsburgh as a stepping stone. Think of WPXI's Andy Gastmeyer and Karen Welles, WTAE's Bob Mayo and KDKA's Harold Hayes, Ralph Ianotti and Mary Robb Jackson.

Jackson had a nice sweeps feature earlier this month on the company in New Jersey that's rehabbing the Carnegie Musuem of Natural History's dinosuars. Yes, a local station sent a reporter out of state for a feature story. Mircales do happen. I was particularly impressed by some of the writing in Jackson's piece, in which she called the New Jersey work shop "Bob the Builder meets Jurassic Park."

Newbies: But praise for veterans should not be taken as scorn for newcomers. Youth does not always equate to inadequacy. KDKA's Sonni Abatta was routinely slammed for her youth on local media chat sites when she started, and while I think some of that may also have been caused by her attractive looks, the reality is she proved herself as a reporter and acquits herself well as an anchor.

Tuned In Journal will be on Thanksgiving break until Monday. Have a happy holiday!
