Central, Gateway to clean up
Friday, November 16, 2007
The Fumbler almost missed deadline for this column. He was too busy disinfecting stadium press boxes.

It's his MRSA precaution.

The Fumbler now wears a surgical mask to all games, washes all his pens afterward and uses Lysol on his electric typewriter after every weekly column.

The good news is The Fumbler's record is pretty clean. He was 14-3 in postseason playoff games last week (including the WPIAL and City League). That makes him 42-7 (.857 percentage) in the postseason. He is 510-124 overall (.804 percentage). It's his first time over .800.

Here are The Fumbler's thoughts on this today's WPIAL semifinals (all games at 7:30 p.m.).

Class AAAA

Central Catholic (11-0) vs. McKeesport (10-1) at West Mifflin -- The Fumbler believes McKeesport will score a few touchdowns on Central Catholic, but he does not believe McKeesport's defense will be able to control Central Catholic. Winner: Central Catholic.

Gateway (10-1) vs. North Allegheny (11-0) at the Wolvarena, Turtle Creek -- This is the fastest team North Allegheny has faced this season. But that will not be the major factor. The key will be whether or not Gateway self-destructs with penalties and turnovers. Winner: Gateway.

Class AAA

Thomas Jefferson (11-0) vs. Pine-Richland (10-1) at Moon -- Pine-Richland has scored 58 and 57 points in two playoff games while Thomas Jefferson has scored 56 and 49. The winner of this game will only score in the 20s, though, and the team with more rushing yards will win. Winner: Thomas Jefferson.

Montour (11-0) vs. Knoch (9-2) at North Hills' Martorelli Stadium -- Wonder if Dick Butkus knows Montour is undefeated and one game away from a championship game? Doesn't everyone know he laid the foundation for this team two years ago when he coached? Right. Winner: Montour.

Class AA

Jeannette (11-0) vs. Aliquippa (9-2) at Highlands -- Jeannette has forced the mercy rule in every game. Under the rule, the clock runs continuously in the second half when a team gets ahead by 35 points. Jeannette can't be worried about mercy in this one, though. The Jayhawks simply need to worry about winning. Winner: Jeannette.

Riverside (10-1) vs. Beaver Falls (10-1) at Ambridge -- Riverside has been one of the surprise teams of the WPIAL playoffs, but the good times are over. Winner: Beaver Falls.

Class A

Clairton (10-1) vs. Springdale (9-1) at Franklin Regional -- Springdale had only one first down when the two teams met earlier this season. This one will not be as one-sided, but Springdale still does not have enough to win. Winner: Clairton.

Serra (11-0) vs. Monessen (11-0) at Belle Vernon -- This is the only semifinal matching undefeated teams. Although Serra averages over 50 points a game, Monessen is good enough to hold Serra below 30. But is Monessen good enough to win? Winner: Serra.
