Fishing Report: 11/16/07
Friday, November 16, 2007

Lake Erie: Creeks got a shot of much-needed rain midweek, triggering fresh runs of steelhead in the tributaries. As of yesterday, fish were scattered up through the middle reaches of Elk and Walnut Creeks on the west side and Twenty Mile on the east. Bait and tackle shops such as Poor Richard's East and BAC Trout Run have commented that the number and size are bigger on average this year than last, with many 9- and 10-pounders reported. BAC weighed an 11 1/2-pound, 30-inch steelhead landed on an egg pattern on Elk yesterday morning. Snow was in the forecast. In Presque Isle Bay, catches of perch are coming on emerald shiners in the marina and waterworks areas and off the northern pier. Some anglers are targeting steelhead in the bay. Nice numbers of largemouth bass and northern pike also are hitting in the bay.

Allegheny River/Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): The river is high and muddy with temperatures in the upper 40s. Anglers are catching walleyes, smallmouth bass, white bass and northern pike. The lake is yielding nice numbers of legal-size walleyes on golden shiners.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Crappies, bluegills and perch are coming off the docks but are running small. After-dark crappie fishing at Sheakleyville Bridge has been productive. Shore fishing pressure has increased.

Pymatuning Reservoir/Shenango River (Crawford County): In the lake, Kenny Lapinsky of New Castle caught some nice walleyes and a 42-inch muskie jigging Sonars off a boat. Walleyes up to 26 inches are being caught in 15 to 18 feet. Anglers also are catching crappies and perch in the bays and off the docks at the marina in Jamestown and other places. Perch are running small with only an occasional jumbo reported. Walleye anglers are doing well in the river, throwing jigs and twister tails, but fish there have been running mostly 18 and 20 inches.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): This 900-acre natural lake turned over two weeks ago and is now clear, but catches have slacked off with scant numbers of quality fish reported, except for a 5 1/4-pound smallmouth bass an angler boated on a tube.

Allegheny River (Venango County): The river was rising and murky midweek, which bodes well for walleye fishing. The bass bite was down.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Angling pressure is down, but anglers are catching crappies on brush piles in 8 to 10 feet.

Allegheny River: As temperatures fall, anglers are catching walleyes up to 30 inches and a lot of saugers, mostly from shore at Highland Park and at Lock 3. An angler released a 42-inch muskie from shore at Highland Park last weekend.

Ohio River: Excellent fishing for walleyes, saugers and smallmouth bass is reported from Emsworth Dam to Dashields Dam.

Monongahela River: Nice numbers of saugers and walleyes are reported at Lock 4 in Charleroi, and at the mouths of Mingo and Pigeon creeks.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Mike Kalufut of Uniontown caught his limit of walleyes, up to 6 pounds, jigging Rapalas in 30 to 40 feet last weekend. There were 15 boats on the lake Monday.

Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): Anglers are catching striped bass pulling diving crankbaits in 10 to 20 feet. Lake trout are being caught in 40 to 45 feet by anglers downrigging small chartreuse spoons and red and white spoons. The bigger lakers haven't been active yet. Smaller ones, 3 to 5 pounds, have been caught in recent weeks.
