Thursday, November 15, 2007

Three fire companies from the PG East region have received Assistance to Firefighters Grants from the federal government.

The grants are awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In all, FEMA awarded $1,254,820 to 14 companies in Pennsylvania. The money, in each instance, went to a company's operations and safety program.

Fort Allen Volunteer Fire Company, Hempfield, got the second-largest award in the state -- $155,768. Only Harrisburg Bureau of Fire's grant ($247,500) was higher.

Citizens Volunter Fire Company No. 1, of Arnold, received $71,250. Pitcairn Fire Company No. 2 got $40,470.

The grants are to be used by local fire companies and emergency medical services organizations for training, to conduct first responder health and safety programs, and to purchase equipment and response vehicles.
