Q: Joe Paterno has to be very close to recapturing the ranking as the winningest active Division 1-A football coach. What is the current status of that competition between he and Florida State's Bobby Bowden? And should Joe recapture the No. 1 spot, wouldn't that be a perfect time for him to officially step down and go out on top -- because, let's face it, he just isn't going to win another national championship?

Michael D. Veslany, Meadville

MUSSELMAN: Florida State's Bobby Bowden has 372 wins and Joe has 371. They have been neck-and-neck for quite some time now and look for things to stay that way. Even if Joe does pass Bowden, I don't think he's going anywhere. I expect him to keep adding to his win total right up until the end. Rounding out the top-5 all-time coaching leaders are Paul "Bear" Bryant at 323 wins, Glenn "Pop" Warner at 319 and Amos Alonzo Stagg at 314.
