Tuned In Journal: 'Back to You' borrows from radio's 'This American Life'

Josh Gad, Ty Burrell, Fred Willard, Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton, Laura Marano and Ayda Field star in "Back to You."

So I was intending this to be a nice little "atta boy" for Fox's "Back to You" (8 tonight, WPGH), a comedy about a local TV news team set in Pittsburgh that I've generally enjoyed. But the plan for today's post changed when I saw tonight's episode, a complete and total rip-off of a story heard on public radio's "This American Life." Ira Glass, call your lawyer.

The episode brazenly swipes from a pretty well known "TAL" episode about a young cop who tried to help a couple get a squirrel out of their home and ended up causing a ton of inadvertent harm instead, including setting a couch on fire. It's even available on a "TAL" CD.

Substitute a raccoon for the squirrel and you've got tonight's "Back to You," a funny enough episode aside from the whole lack of originality thing.

To its credit, at least "Back to You" borrows from a high-quality source, but are the writers really so desperate for stories this early in the show's run that they can't come up with something fresh on their own?

The episode begins with the news team engaging in dreadfully painful banter as they try to stretch the newscast to fill the time slot. Before long, everyone ends up at the home of news anchor Kelly (Patricia Heaton), who's got a critter in her attic. News anchor Chuck (Kelsey Grammer) is tired of her fending for herself and insists on helping. Noses are wounded, concussions suffered, the raccoon gets trapped under a sofa and more of the exact same thing that happened to that real-life cop on "This American Life" follows on "Back to You."
