Vintage concerts featuring the likes of John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery are the focus of Naxos' seven new DVD releases titled, "Jazz Icons."

Filmed in Europe between 1958 and 1966, the series also features performances by Sarah Vaughan, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Dexter Gordon and Duke Ellington.

The running time for the DVDs range from 60 to 120 minutes, and most of the performances have never been released.

Among the highlights are:

• Three John Coltrane concerts featuring 90 minutes of music, including appearances by Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, McCoy Tyner, Eric Dolphy and Elvin Jones. Miles Davis also appear on the 1960 recording in Germany.

• Two historic Brubeck concerts from 1964 and 1966 featuring the classic quartet with Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright and Joe Morello.

• Duke Ellington Big Band concert in 1958 featuring Clark Terry, Johnny Hodges and Ray Nance.

• Three Sarah Vaughan concerts from 1958 to 1964.

• Three Wes Montgomery concerts filmed in Holland, Belgium and England. The liner notes were written by Pat Metheny and the afterword by Carlos Santana.

• Three concerts by Charles Mingus recorded in Norway, Sweden and Belgium.

• Three concerts by Dexter Gordon recorded in 1963 and 1964 in Holland, Belgium and Switzerland.

Each DVD also includes a 24-page booklet with insightful and informative essays by jazz historians.
