Stylebook: Perfume carries Warhol name
Monday, November 12, 2007
A bottle of Silver Factory by Bond No. 9.

Pop icon Andy Warhol once said, "Another way to take up more space is with perfume. I really love wearing perfume."

A new fragrance that pays homage to the quirky genius launches Dec. 1, the first in a series of collectible scents resulting from a collaboration with the trendy young Bond No. 9 New York fragrance house and the New York-based Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Andy Warhol's Silver Factory is a smoky, spicy cocktail of incense, grapefruit, wood resin, amber jasmine, cedarwood and violet, Mr. Warhol's favorite aroma. The "universal" fragrance -- it can be worn by men and women -- has an almost metallic tinge. It contains an unusually high 28 percent perfume concentrates, falling somewhere between eau de parfum and perfume extract.

The name was inspired by Mr. Warhol's aluminum-walled haunt in the '60s, the Factory in Midtown Manhattan. The bottle, in Bond No. 9's signature star shape, has a textured-silver background inspired by the Campbell's Soup label designed by Mr. Warhol. The exception is that turquoise and purple replace red and white.

The fragrance comes in a 3.4-ounce size and is $230 at Bond No. 9's four New York boutiques, Saks Fifth Avenue stores and both company's Web sites.

Bond No. 9 and the nonprofit foundation plan to launch more Warhol-inspired fragrances, all using the artist's paintings, silkscreens, illustrations and film stills as inspiration. Every scent created by the fragrance house has a New York theme, and so will the Warhol scents.

Also on the fragrance front, Clarins has launched a limited-edition version of one of its best-kept secrets: Eau Dynamisante treatment fragrance. With ginseng, ginger, aloe and essential oils of lemon, caraway, orange, rosemary, thyme and lavender, the treatment scent was formulated to soothe, soften and moisturize skin.

All profits from its sale will benefit Little Star Foundation, which was started by Andrea Jaeger, Clarins' 2007 Most Dynamic Woman honoree. The French beauty brand presents the award annually.
