Submit your Pitt football question

Yesterday I posted my all-time Pitt team and asked for your responses, and the responses have been overwhelming, with a lot of names that I either left off or that people just wanted to add to positions (like an extra running back) so they can fit one more player in. But the beauty of picking an all-time team and limiting it to 22 is that you have to make some very difficult choices at a lot of positions. Most of the suggestions were very good and you could make a very strong argument for a lot of players. I think the players whose names most people seemed to think I left off are safeties Bob Jury and Carlton Williamson, linebackers Ezekial Gadson and Tom Tumulty, kicker Carson Long, running back Ironhead Heyward and, of course, all-time leading tackler Arnie Weatherington.

Here are some samples of the responses I received. (Thanks to all for digging in. Keep sending your ideas about who you think should be on the team and at some point down the road I'll compile them all and see if I can come up with our unofficial consensus all-time Pitt team and post it for you) ...

Q: Related to your all time Pitt football team, I always thought Hugh Green and Ricky Jackson were linebackers. Did they play DE at Pitt? How about Chris Doleman at DL?

Mark Routch, Boiling Springs, Pa.

ZEISE: Yes, this is the tough part about compiling all-time teams - different systems called for players to play perhaps different positions. But Hugh Green and Rickey Jackson were considered stand-up defensive ends in a system that I believe was a 5-2. It was similar to a 3-4 except the two outside linebackers were bookends to the defensive line. A number of people wanted to put these two at linebacker and even though technically they were defensive ends they served many of the same functions as linebackers in a 3-4. If you considered them linebackers, then, yes, there would be two spots open for guys like Keith Hamilton, Tony Siragusa, Marc Spindler, Sean Gilbert or Chris Doleman. Frankly that wouldn't be a bad way to go since Jackson and Green are listed as linebackers in the Pitt media guide and I believe that's the position they both played in the NFL. But since they were technically considered defensive ends in the scheme, we'll put them there as well.

Q: Didn't Ruben Brown play defensive tackle at Pitt? I seem to remember him as a defensive player--not an O lineman.

Bill Kaib, Greer, S.C.

ZEISE: He was recruited as a defensive lineman but he was moved to the offensive following his redshirt season and played the next four years on the offensive line.

Q: Not a bad All-Time team you picked! You do know your Pitt football! I'd put Carlton Williamson, Chris Doleman, and maybe Tony Siragusa in on defense, and Gordon Jones, Ironhead Heyward on offense. One question - do any of these guys have eligibility?

Mike Costanza, Berkeley, Calif.

ZEISE: Well, considering most of them already signed with an agent, I am afraid they couldn't suit up and help Pitt here down the stretch. Which leads me to another question - if you could take any four players from their best season and put them on this year's team, who would they be? I think you'd have to consider the areas this team has struggled, but if I were the one doing the choosing I'd pick Dan Marino (his junior year) (though Pat Bostick has played well, he isn't close to the point yet where the coaches will let him throw it down the field), Jeff Christy, Ruben Brown and Darrelle Revis. I'm thinking with those four in the starting lineup a bowl game might be possible.
