Local sources for turkeys
Thursday, November 08, 2007

Sources for locally raised turkeys include:

• Dream Thyme Farm, Mercer, Mercer County.

The turkeys are raised on pasture and local organic feed. No hormones or antibiotics. Because there are many goats on this farm, the turkeys are fed raw goat's milk as a treat. Quite a few of them have been to educational workshops where children have learned up close about turkeys and where their food comes from. The sizes should be around 20 to 28 pounds. Turkeys will be brought to the Saturday farm market in Sewickley for pick-up. Orders taken on the Web page, by e-mail or contact Lynne Gelston. 724-748-9124

• Eichner's Farm, 285 Richard Road, McCandless (right off Route 19).

Fresh, free-range turkeys raised without antibiotics, hormones or medications. There is no animal protein in the feed. Come to the farm to order (new orders are limited because of supply). No phone orders. No luck? You can still make a reservation for dinner at Hyeholde Restaurant in Moon. They've been roasting Eichner's turkeys for the past dozen years. 724-935-2897

• Iffts Turkey Farm, Pioneer Road, Evans City, Butler County.

All natural and free of steroids, preservatives and hormones. Limited number, but still taking orders by phone for the holidays. Pick up orders at the farm only. 724-538-5968

• J.L. Kennedy's Four Seasons Farm, Butler, Butler County.

Their all-natural fresh turkeys are free of additives, antibiotics and hormones. They are sold at the East Liberty Farmers Market Co-op every Saturday morning. If you don't want turkey this year, check out their chickens, ducks, geese, smoked and fresh pheasant. Place orders as soon as you can. 724-898-2316.

Pounds Turkey Farm, 4200 Melwood Road, Leechburg.

All natural and free of additives, antibiotics and hormones. Orders may be taken at the farm for pickup. Pounds' turkeys are also available at some Pittsburgh markets: Brilliant Market in Aspinwall, Schramm's in Export, Tom Friday's in McKees Rocks, Dave's Country Meats in Middlesex and others. 724-845-7661

• Whole Foods Market, 5880 Centre Ave., East Liberty

Natural, free-range turkeys, free of additives, antibiotics and hormones. Special orders only are taken for certified organic turkeys. 412-441-7960.
