WPIAL Class AA Roundup: Jeannette dominates at home, wins, 49-7
Pryor rushes for 2 scores against Seton-LaSalle

Jeannette, the defending WPIAL Class AA champion, disposed of visiting Seton-LaSalle, 49-7, last night in its first-round playoff matchup at McKee Stadium in Jeannette.

The Jayhawks (10-0), the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked team in the WPIAL and PIAA, got off to slow start before they scored three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 28-0 halftime lead. Jeanette has now outscored opponents, 395-6, in first-half action this year.

Senior quarterback Terrelle Pryor ran for 157 yards on nine carries and completed all three of his pass attempts for 82 yards and a touchdown. Pryor also had touchdown runs of 14 and 84 yards in the second quarter.

Jordan Hall ran for a pair of touchdowns and caught the touchdown pass from Pryor. Jeannette has now outscored its opponents, 562-38, this season.

Jeannette will face Shady Side Academy in the Class AA quarterfinals.

OTHER GAMES

Aliquippa 36, Burgettstown 0

Daron Cox rushed for 173 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown to lead Aliquippa (8-2) to an opening-round win against Burgettstown (7-3) at Carl A. Aschman Stadium in Aliquippa.

Burgettstown was trying to win its first playoff game since 1977, but fell behind the Quips, 14-0, at halftime and never recovered.

Aliquippa, the No. 4 seed, outgained the Blue Devils in total offense, 408-84, and had 305 yards rushing to Burgettstown's 64.

Terry Patrick backed Cox's rushing effort with 115 yards on 11 carries. Patrick scored on an 8-yard run in the second quarter and capped the scoring with a 64-yard touchdown scamper in the final quarter.

Aliquippa has won 55 playoff games, including the PIAA playoffs, since Burgettstown last won a playoff game.

Riverside 20, Beaver 7

Riverside (9-1) earned a quarterfinal matchup with Ford City after knocking off Beaver (8-2) at Riverside's Memorial Stadium.

Codi Jackson ran for two touchdowns. Beaver limited Riverside's Jake Wickline, who has rushed for more than 4,000 career yards, to a season-low 74 yards. Wickline scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

Beaver Falls 35, Greens. Central Cath. 14

Beaver Falls (9-1) raced to a 28-0 halftime lead en route to its win against Greensburg Central Catholic (7-3) at Reeves Field at Geneva College.

Kenny Cottman caught touchdown passes covering 45 and 53 yards in the first quarter from quarterback Tony Carter to get the Tigers, the No. 5-ranked team in Class AA WPIAL, rolling. Von McKenzie ran for a pair of scores for the Tigers in the second quarter.

Carter connected on six of eight passes for 164 yards.

Greensburg Central Catholic had advanced to the quarterfinals the past three years.

Shady Side Academy 14, South Fayette 6

Shady Side Academy (9-1) rented lights for its opening-round playoff game against South Fayette (7-3) and rallied for 14 points in the final quarter, scoring the winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining.

South Fayette led, 3-0, entering the fourth quarter, but Tim Giel caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Dan Rooney to cap a nine-play, 73-yard drive to give the Indians a 6-3 lead. Shady Side Academy missed the extra point.

South Fayette tied the game with a 24-yard field goal by Drew Hareza with 6:02 to play before Shady Side Academy put together an 11-play, 76-yard drive capped by Brian Nickel's 3-yard touchdown run with 32 seconds to go.

Nickel finished with 138 yards on 24 rushing attempts.

South Fayette has not won a playoff game since 2000 when it was in Class A.

Ford City 41, Laurel 14

Ford City (10-0) scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to pull away from visiting Laurel (6-4). Laurel closed to 21-7 at halftime, but Carter Haponski scored on runs of 12 and 58 yards in the third quarter before catching his second touchdown pass of the game, a 59-yarder from quarterback Jordan Eckman to put the game away.

Haponski also caught a 61-yard scoring pass from Eckman in the second quarter. Eckman completed 5 of his 10 passes for 179 yards in the game. He also ran for two touchdowns for the Sabers. Ford City has now reached the quarterfinals round five consecutive years.
