Schenley girls celebrate their City League championship against Allderdice last night

As expected, Allderdice claimed its 18th City League boys' soccer championship in 20 years with a 5-0 victory against Langley last night at Cupples Stadium in the second game of a championship doubleheader.

Allderdice (17-2-2) dominated play, but led by only 1-0 at intermission on a goal by Steve Canton with 7:13 left. Canton lobbed a high ball into the box that Mustangs goalie Eric Stupak tried to punch away. Instead, he directed the shot into the net. Nevertheless, he made several spectacular saves throughout the game.

Allderdice had outscored the Mustangs (9-9), 14-1, in two regular-season meetings, so another one-sided victory was expected after Allderdice edged rival Schenley, 1-0, in the semifinals.

"We knew it was going to be tough to play with Allderdice, but our guys never quit. I'm very proud of them for the season they had," said Langley coach Dan Kliber, who started the program in 2001 after it was temporarily dropped after the 1999 season.

This was Langley's first appearance in the City League title game, having blanked Carrick, 4-0, in the semifinals. Langley defeated Carrick three times this season, its first victories against the Raiders in at least 15 years.

The Dragons began to break the game open when Max Gold scored on a penalty kick with 38:18 left in the contest, making it 2-0.

Philip Broadus then connected with 18 minutes left, Zack Spolar scored with 11 minutes on the clock and defender Jake Schiller capped the scoring with four minutes remaining when he was moved up front. Spollar's goal was somewhat spectacular as he dribbled through two defenders before placing a left-footed shot into the left corner.

"At halftime, I just told the guys to relax a little, that the 1-0 score didn't matter because they were playing well," Allderdice coach Ed Powers said. "It was tough to get up for this game at first because Schenley is our big game, but this is the championship and that's been one of our goals."

Allderdice plays host to the WPIAL Class AAA champion -- Peters Township or Bethel Park -- Tuesday at Cupples Stadium in the first round of the PIAA tournament. The Dragons have not won a PIAA playoff game since reaching the semifinals in 2000.

Schenley won its fifth City League girls' soccer title, but the program's first since 2003, by blanking Allderdice, 1-0, in the first game at Cupples last night.

Junior forward Cecile Claussen scored on a rebound volley directly in front of the goal from 10 yards out. Claussen's winning shot followed up a blast taken by sophomore forward Monique Sims. The game's only goal occurred with 14:53 left in the contest.

Schenley (15-6-1) snapped a nine-game losing streak to Allderdice (13-8-1), claiming its first victory against the Dragons since the Spartans last earned the city crown four years ago.

Allderdice beat Schenley three weeks ago in overtime, 2-1. The Dragons also trounced the Spartans in their initial meeting this season, 6-0, the day Schenley's Jason Gallagher was elevated from assistant coach to head coach.
