Call it a sequel -- something like "WPIAL Tapegate 2" would fit.
One year after a high-profile videotaping incident at a WPIAL high school football practice, apparently something similar happened at Beaver Falls' practice Thursday evening.
According to Beaver Falls coach Ryan Matsook, parents of some of his players witnessed a person they identified as a Beaver Area parent secretly videotaping Beaver Falls' practice. He was not further identified.
Beaver Falls defeated Beaver, 19-0, last night. That kept the Bobcats from winning their first conference title since 1987.
Also according to Matsook, the Beaver Falls parents approached the man in an attempt to ascertain what he was doing and to confiscate the tape. The man hurried to his vehicle and fled.
Matsook said he was standing on the practice field when he immediately called Beaver coach Jeff Beltz.
"Yes, I'm mad, most definitely," Matsook said.
"But I am 150,000 percent confident this incident had nothing to do with Jeff Beltz or anyone on his staff telling that man to come to our practice and videotape us.
"Jeff Beltz is a class act and runs a class program and he would never do something like this.
"What this comes down to is a crazy parent who acted like a jerk and tarnished a matchup between two great football teams."
Beltz confirmed that he fielded a call from Matsook Thursday night and had knowledge of the incident. Beltz also reaffirmed that the man doing the taping was acting independently and no one from the Beaver staff had asked the parent to videotape Beaver Falls' practice.
"No tape showed up here," Beltz said. "I don't know much about the incident other than receiving a phone call from Ryan Matsook [Thursday night]. At the time, we were on the practice field, too. So it definitely was not someone on our staff. But, yes, I can confirm I heard about an incident over at their practice from Ryan [Matsook]."
The incident is reminiscent of one that occurred last year involving Shenango football parent Frank Colavecchia. A few days after Shenango quarterback Rocco Colavecchia threw for 457 yards against Mars, it was revealed that Colavecchia's father, was caught secretly filming Mars' defensive practice.
Mars coach Scott Heinauer claimed Colavecchia's father gained entrance to Mars' practice by posing as a scout for Ohio University.
