Standing tall: Dukes coach makes SI list
McConnell-Serio named best at her height
Saturday, October 27, 2007

Duquesne women's basketball coach Suzie McConnell-Serio, who stood tall on the court, made the short list of Sports Illustrated's best pro and college basketball players -- men and women -- at every height ranging from 7-foot-7 Manute Bol to 5-3 Muggsy Bogues.

At 5 feet, 4 inches, McConnell-Serio is flanked by the 5-3 Bogues and 5-5 Earl Boykins in a colorful spread of pictures of the 29 players in a special foldout section this week under the headline "All-Size All-Stars."

McConnell-Serio, 41, was an All-American point guard at Penn State from 1985-88, a two-time Olympian and the WNBA Newcomer of the Year in 1998-99 with the Cleveland Rockers. She was a member of the U.S. team that won a gold medal in 1988 and a bronze in 1992.

The two runners-up at 5-4 were Baylor women's coach Kim Mulkey and Georgia State coach Lea Henry, who both played on the U.S. team that won Olympic gold in 1984.

In addition to McConnell-Serio, two other women were selected -- 5-8 Ann Meyers and 5-6 Dawn Staley.

McConnell-Serio isn't the only player mentioned in the article with ties to Duquesne basketball. Norm Nixon, who led the Dukes to their most recent NCAA tournament in 1977, is the third alternative choice at 6-2 behind Jerry West, Hal Greer and Cheryl Miller.

Connie Hawkins, who played professionally in Pittsburgh with the Rens and Pipers, is the first runner-up at 6-8 behind Jerry Lucas.
