Archbishop Desmond Tutu prayed alongside Bishop Robert Duncan at an interfaith service in Calvary Episcopal Church, Shadyside.

While at Calvary, Archbishop Tutu, 77, received honorary degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.

After retiring in 1996, he began teaching theology at Emory University in Atlanta.

The archbishop was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for helping to wage a peaceful battle against apartheid in his homeland. His work for reconciliation in that country earned him a global reputation as a human rights activist.
