Add these new models to your shopping list

Among the hundreds of new 2008 models, there is at least one -- maybe more than one -- that is right for you.

But with all the bewildering choices out there, which ones really belong on your "must-see" shopping list?

That's what PG On Wheels is here for, to help you sort it all out.

I've selected my top new vehicles -- and in two cases, whole lineups -- that you absolutely should not miss this year. I'm listing them in no particular order. Here goes:

Honda Accord

Honda continues its winning ways with an Accord that is bigger, better equipped, and even thriftier than the pretty stellar 2007 model. Honda has given both the Accord coupe and sedan interiors that are so large they are now classified full-size cars. And for those of you who are concerned about safety, the Accord now offers Honda's impact energy-dispersing body design.

Better still, the Accord is still the drive of choice for families who want some sport and excitement in their motoring. You'll find the new Accord to be every bit as athletic and European flavored as it's ever been.

Chevy Malibu

The Malibu has always been a good, solid, economical choice for families, and the all-new 2008 model builds on those qualities quite nicely. But now it's the sexy choice for families.

It's one of the most beautiful sedans of the season, and looks thousands more expensive than it really is. You'll see some Audi, some BMW, and a good dose of Acura in its clean, chiseled lines. The interior shows materials that are stronger and more attractive than ever, and build quality is quite high as well.

All told, this is a vastly improved automobile with lots of value and equipment built in. I'm predicting big things for the Malibu-- and plenty of ringing cash registers for Chevy.

Cadillac CTS

The car that started the road back for Cadillac is an international favorite now in its latest and all new version, with journalists and business writers alike all over the world praising its strong performance, world-class interior and fit and finish that rivals the globe's best. This car was tested exhaustively on the famed Nurburgring race track in Germany and it shows with strong acceleration, braking and handling. If you're looking for a luxury car you cannot overlook this one.

Chrysler 300

This one is a classic. It's been around for a while, and though many have tried to knock it off its throne as one of best styled large sedans, the 300 is still at the top of the heap. I also like it because it's a strong handler, and can corner and stop with the best of them. Acceleration with the larger engines is strong, and if you get the highly acclaimed 300C SRT8, it's virtually unstoppable.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Santa Fe is easily one of the best of the smaller crossovers by virtue of its strong build quality, long warranty, practical, flexible interior, and looks that belie its relatively low price. It's got safety equipment galore, and Consumer Reports gives it a strong recommendation as a top choice for car buyers. And if you need a third row seat, you've got it in this one.

Mazda5

Who needs to spend $30,000 to $40,000 on a minivan? Here you have a seven-seater that's sporty, fun to drive, good looking and easy to park. How many can say that about their minivan? Don't miss this one. It's a keeper.

Mercedes C-Class

This is the choice for those who want prestige, a reasonable price, strong performance, and pretty decent economy, too. It may be the entry level model for Mercedes, but it sure doesn't look it, and you won't feel it either. It's very much the miniature S Class, as far as I'm concerned. And if you're looking for an extra measure of sports in your next entry level luxury sedan, you'll want to check out the Sports model for the C-Class. It's the best ever from this company.

Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra

These pickups are above reproach in terms of comfort, quiet, utility, and performance. They were all new last year, and the difference between them and the previous generation was eye-opening. Much better quality and fit and finish, easier to drive and park than the competition, and loaded with safety equipment, too. You can't do much better than this pair if you want a pickup.

Toyota Highlander

It's got sharp new looks, a highly flexible interior that even allows you to reconfigure the second row using the middle portion that converts into a number of practical uses. It's got fold flat seats, lots of safety goodies, and plenty of cargo space too. It's hard to top this one for a family hauler.

Saturn (the whole lineup)

There's not a ringer in the bunch. Saturn now has the newest fleet on the market. If you want a SUV, the Vue has style, European flair, strong performance in V-6 form, and lots of standard equipment, while the Outlook is a classy, well-built, high quality crossover that is winning applause everywhere.

Looking for a sedan? The Aura is top notch. Classy style, a sporty, well designed interior and lots of built in value are hallmarks of the Aura.

And the Sky? One of the sexiest roadsters around, and a strong performer in Red Line form.

Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ

These triplets rule the roost when it comes to combining European flair with some of the safest, highest quality designs around. They also are among the few family sedans that offer all-wheel-drive and hybrid versions, too. These three rank at the top of the family car heap, and are strong evidence that better days are ahead at Ford.

Nissan Rogue

This all-new small crossover is in a class by itself when it comes to bringing sporting qualities to its corner of the market. It's a blast to drive, has practical features like cargo organizers, and has an expensive looking, clean contemporary interior. It's a terrific package that should bring plenty of sales to Nissan.
