Group offers free bus trip for WWII veterans to D.C.
Tuesday, October 23, 2007

World War II veterans from around the region are invited on a free bus trip to see the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

At 6 a.m. on Nov. 13, buses will leave from the east (the Miracle Mile Shopping Center in Monroeville), the west (Coraopolis Borough Building), the north (Ross Park Mall) and the south (Parkway Center Mall).

Food, drink and medical staff will be provided. The buses will return here at around 8:30 p.m.

More than 220 local vets took a trip on May 22, according to one of the organizers, Jim Hilts, whose mantra is, "Let's get them there before it's too late." He and his grassroots veterans-appreciation group pay for the trips (each veteran costs about $50) with donations from families, individuals and businesses.

The deadline to register is Nov. 6. Call 412-367-4807 (north), 412-334-2044 (east and south) and 412-269-6180 (west).
