California's defense lived up to its billing as the No. 1 unit in NCAA Division II as the Vulcans stifled visiting Edinboro, 26-8, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division yesterday.
The No. 8-ranked Vulcans (8-0, 4-0) lead Division II in scoring defense (6.3 ppg), rushing defense (31.0 yards per game) and total defense (145.3 yards per game). California held Edinboro (5-3, 2-2) to 47 yards rushing on 21 carries. Edinboro's Trevor Harris completed 31 of 53 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown.
California's Joe Ruggiero completed 14 of 19 passes for 147 yards and touchdowns of 40 yards to Jermaine Moye and 2 yards to Kirby Griffin.

W&J 49, Grove City 14: Bobby Swallow threw for 256 yards and five scores as the Presidents (7-0, 3-0) won at Grove City (3-5, 3-3) in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Luke Espe and Craig Besong each had two touchdown catches.
Waynesburg 25, Thiel 20: Waynesburg freshman Robert Heller rushed for 135 yards on 32 carries to set school records for a season with 1,305 yards and 238 attempts. He scored on a 1-yard run.
Carnegie Mellon 21, Chicago 0: The visiting Tartans (3-4) ended a four-game losing streak, the school's longest since 1974. Robert Gimson rushed for 113 yards and a score; Travis Sivek rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
Slippery Rock 38, Shippensburg 34: Nate Crookshank's 17-yard touchdown pass to Paul Favers with two seconds left lifted the visiting Rock (7-1, 4-1) to the PSAC West win. Favers returned a kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown with 1:18 left to give the Rock a 31-27 lead. Shippensburg answered with Kevin Marshall's 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 34-31 lead with 1:07 left.
IUP 44, Lock Haven 13: Andrew Krewatch completed 16 of 28 passes for 232 yards and three scores as IUP (6-1, 3-1) won at Lock Haven (0-8, 0-3) in the PSAC West.
Geneva 10, Thomas More 9: Luke Duriancik scored on a 5-yard pass and Nick DiPietro kick the winning extra point as Geneva (5-2) won at Thomas More (4-3).
