Blues around town this weekend

It looks to be a fine weekend coming up for some interesting blues.

Tonight, at the Thunderbird Cafe in Lawrenceville, check out the badly underexposed Chicago-style harp player Wallace Coleman.

Among his many credits -- spending 10 years in Robert Lockwood Jr.'s band. He plays a swampy harp, and sings classic, gritty blues.

Tomorrow night, Watermelon Slim lands at Moondog's in Blawnox. He's a bluesy singer-songwriter whose unique style tends to defy description. However, an undaunted BlueNotes gave it a shot here.

Also in town Saturday night (Carnegie Lecture Hall, Oakland) as part of Calliope's winter music series, Alice Stuart and her band, The Formerlys, will open for the Roches, none-too shabby singers themselves.

Stuart is another very interesting blues singer, having begun her career back in the '60s as one of those folk-blues singers who inhabited all the coffee houses. Her Arhoolie recording gig, however, means that she was better than most. Learn more about this Washington-based, award-winning blueswoman in the BlueNotes archives.
