Pine-Richland High School graduate Mike Van Sickle shared medalist honors at the Windon Memorial Classic, a 12-team college golf tournament hosted by Northwestern University at Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill.
Van Sickle, a junior at Marquette University, shot a 70-70-66--206 to finish at 7-under total of 206. He tied with Minnesota's Clayton Rask. In the third round, Van Sickle recorded six birdies on the final nine holes.
Last spring, Van Sickle became the first Marquette golfer to be selected to play in an NCAA tournament. He was one of six individuals selected to play in the NCAA Central Regional.
An honorable mention All-American, Van Sickle set a Marquette single-season scoring mark of 71.91.
NA grad gives extra effort
North Allegheny High School graduate Ryan Rylands deflected an extra-point attempt with 3:05 left to preserve the lead in Grove City's 14-13 win over Thiel College in the 24th annual battle for the Mercer County Cup.
Thiel had threatened to tie the score with Dan Hess' 7-yard touchdown run, but Rylands deflected the extra-point attempt by Sammy Koyl. Rylands, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior defensive end, has recorded 18 solo tackles, 14 assists, 1/2 sack, and one fumble recovery.
QV grad stonewalls 'em
Quaker Valley High School graduate Mike Codita has recorded four shutouts for the Westminter College men's soccer team.
Codita, a 6-0 freshman, has started 14 of 15 games for the Titans who have a 7-5-3 record. He has allowed only 16 goals, while registering 80 saves for a .833 save percentage.
PSAC honoree
North Hills High School graduate Katie Bork was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week after placing second at the Slippery Rock University Open.
Bork, a junior at Slippery Rock, ran the 6K course in 23:19 to lead all PSAC runners. Grove City's Kristen Carter won the race with a time of 22:54.
She climbs Pitt list
Baldwin High School graduate Diana Andreyko has moved to No. 3 on the all-time kill list for the University of Pittsburgh women's volleyball team.
Andreyko, a 5-foot-11 senior outside hitter, is a four-year starter who has recorded 1,678 kills, which is only three short of Wendy Hatlestad, a 2003 graduate who had 1,681 during her career with the Panthers.
She needs 137 kills to break the school record of 1,815, set by Anne Lucanie in 1993.
Andreyko broke into the starting lineup as a freshman and recorded 413 kills. She has led the Panthers in kills the last two seasons, recording 516 as a sophomore, and 459 last year. She had 290 so far this season.
Andreyko also ranks first in school history in career total attempts, with 4,507, and sixth in career serving aces, with 115.
He sets Pitt kicking mark
Upper St. Clair High School graduate Conor Lee set a University of Pittsburgh record when he converted all six extra points in last week's 48-45 loss to Navy.
Lee, a 5-11, 190-pound redshirt junior, has recorded 64 consecutive extra-point attempts, which breaks the old record of 60 in a row, set by Carson Long in 1974.
W&J receiving record falls
Thomas Jefferson graduate Tom McCafferty set a Washington & Jefferson College record with four touchdown receptions in Saturday's 58-18 win over Westminster.
McCafferty, a 6-0, 195-pound senior, had eight catches for 146 yards, including touchdown receptions of 8, 10, 4, and 8 yards.
