Swallow's 6 TDs pace Presidents

Westminster's 58-18 home loss yesterday against nationally-ranked Washington & Jefferson was tough to Swallow.

The Presidents (6-0, 2-0) led 44-12 at halftime in this Presidents' Athletic Conference game in New Wilmington as W&J quarterback Bobby Swallow led the blowout with six touchdown passes.

Ranked ninth in the latest D3football.com poll, W&J benefited from Swallow's 357-yard passing performance. Swallow completed 27 of 39 pass attempts. Tom McCafferty (8 catches for 146 yards) and Kevin Mathews (8 catches for 100 yards) were the primary targets.

Mathews also rushed for 78 yards on 14 carries. McCafferty caught scoring passes of 8, 10, 4, and 8 yards.

Case Western Reserve 20, Carnegie Mellon 17: In overtime, Sam Coffey kicked a 30-yard field goal to send Carnegie Mellon to its fourth consecutive defeat, producing Carnegie Mellon's longest losing streak since 1974. Carnegie Mellon lost despite Travis Sivek's 183 yards rushing on 37 carries. Sivek scored a third quarter touchdown on a 2-yard run that gave the Tartans a 17-10 lead.

Duquesne 27, Saint Francis 17: The Dukes (4-2) rallied for their fourth consecutive victory, keeping host Saint Francis (0-5) winless. Saint Francis led 7-3 at halftime. Kevin Rombach led Duquesne with 230 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Central Connecticut 16, Robert Morris 10: Adrian Hull's 12-yard run with 3:35 left led to the Colonials' loss in New Britain, Conn. The loss snapped a Robert Morris seven-game road winning streak.

West Virginia State 21, Seton Hill 13: Jermain King's touchdown receptions from Kevin O'Brien led West Virginia State (5-1) to victory in Institute, W.Va.

Slippery Rock 41, Clarion 18: The host Rock (6-1, 1-1) won their first PSAC-West game of the season by routing Clarion (0-7, 0-3). North Hills High School product Ryan Lehmeier led the Slippery Rock attack with three touchdown runs.

Waynesburg 45, Bethany 7: The unbeaten Yellow Jackets (6-0, 3-0) won at Bethany (2-4, 0-3) by scoring in every quarter. Robert Heller led Waynesburg with 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Ray Hightower caught two scoring passes from Kyle Kiper.

California 27, Lock Haven 3: The Vulcans (7-0, 3-0) remained on top in the PSAC-West with a victory at Lock Haven (0-7, 0-3). Tyler Lorenz led California with a pair of field goals while Daine Williams scored touchdowns on runs of 1 and 48 yards. Lock Haven was held to five first downs and 66 yards total offense.

Thomas More 44, St. Vincent 17: Despite scoring twice in the first quarter, the host Bearcats (0-5) fell against their Presidents' Athletic Conference rival from Kentucky. Thomas More outscored St. Vincent, 27-0, in the fourth quarter.

Grove City 14, Thiel 13: The visiting Wolverines (3-4, 3-2) defeated the Tomcats (2-5, 1-3) for the first time in four years.
