Clairton, Brashear roll to big victories
Sunday, October 14, 2007

The Avonworth football squad had a case of slippery fingers yesterday, and South Side Beaver made them pay for the miscues.

Host South Side Beaver (4-3, 1-3) capitalized on four lost Avonworth fumbles to earn a narrow 21-20 victory in the WPIAL Class A Big Seven Conference. Avonworth (2-5, 1-4) was lucky to lose the football just four times, as the Antelopes fumbled seven times.

South Side Beaver won despite losing the total yardage battle, 263-180, including a 241-105 Avonworth advantage on the ground.

Jonathan Bushmire had a receiving touchdown for the Rams and Jordan Potts and Eric White rushed for scores. White's decisive 4-yard touchdown run came with 8:36 remaining.

Avonworth's potential winning drive ended when it turned the ball over on downs with 2:40 remaining.

More Class A

Clairton 66, Wilkinsburg 0: Clairton (6-1, 4-0), the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked WPIAL and PIAA Class A team, substantiated those lofty rankings with a blowout victory against host Wilkinsburg (0-7, 0-4) in the Eastern Conference. The Bears jumped out to a 54-0 halftime advantage.

Apollo-Ridge 15, Riverview 14: Derek Bandurak scampered in from 5 yards and Justin Reddy scored on the subsequent 2-point conversion in overtime to lift Apollo-Ridge (3-4, 1-2) to the victory against host Riverview (3-4, 2-2) in an Eastern Conference matchup. The winning score came on the heels of Riverview scoring first in overtime on a Nick Buchser 8-yard run followed by a Sam Kelly extra point. The game entered overtime at 7-7, after the teams traded first-quarter touchdowns. Apollo-Ridge scored first when Mike Bell pulled in a 17-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Andring. Riverview answered when Mike DiCocco caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jared Soell.
