Football is game of pundamentals
Friday, October 12, 2007
The Fumbler loves games. Particularly high school football games.

But the one he enjoys most is his annual "Name Game," in which he has a little fun with names he has seen this season. Fun is the operative word; The Fumbler does not want to offend anyone.

Here goes:

In the offseason, do Max Kielbasa of Keystone Oaks and Pat Capatolla of Seton-LaSalle work together in the deli at the Banksville Road Kuhn's? Do they make much bread?

With Matt King and Zach Lord on hand, is it a surprise that Shaler is contending for a WPIAL crown? Are they neighbors on Mount Royal Boulevard?

Does having Travis November as a kicker make Ford City a playoff favorite? And shouldn't Riverside running back Josh Gibson be playing fall baseball?

Being an all-around sports fanatic, The Fumbler couldn't help but notice some girls' names. Isn't Geibel soccer player Aryn Askin a natural for the Post-Gazette's feature, "Just Askin' "? And has anyone seen Serra Catholic golfer Sarah Heimlich maneuver around a course?

Enough!

By any name, The Fumbler sparkled last week, compiling a 54-11 record (.830 percentage). That gave him a season mark of 312-83 (.790). Here are his selections for this weekend's top games:

Shaler (6-0, 2-0) at North Allegheny (6-0, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Many still question how good Shaler is, but The Fumbler says the Titans are definitely good enough to stay with North Allegheny. But in the end, can Shaler stand up to North Allegheny's offensive and defensive lines? This is Shaler's best start since 1994. That year, the Titans started 8-0 before losing to ... North Allegheny. Winner: North Allegheny.

Penn Hills (3-3, 2-0) at Gateway (5-1, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- After giving up 36 points in Week 4, Gateway's defense has improved the past two games, allowing only 15 points. That defense will determine the outcome of this Quad East Conference clash. Winner: Gateway.

Upper St. Clair (4-2, 1-1) at Bethel Park (4-2, 1-1), 7:30 p.m. today -- What does Bethel Park have left in the tank after last week's tough double-overtime loss to McKeesport? This one could determine one of the top two playoff spots in the Great Southern Conference and home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Winner: Bethel Park.

Western Beaver (5-1, 3-0) at Monaca (6-0, 4-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Western Beaver's Shane Waida (620 yards rushing) will likely play after missing last week's game with an injury. That's good news for Western Beaver, but it still won't be enough to knock off the host Indians. Winner: Monaca.
