Although I generally liked the second episode of "Bionic Woman"(9 tonight, NBC), I'm not particularly fond of bionic bartender Jaime's younger sister, who seems mostly to serve as an annoyance. I can't help but wonder if the dynamic would have been different if producers had stuck with the deaf sister, played by Mae Whitman, in the original pilot.
Why the change in plans? Executive producer Jason Smilovic offered this explanation that gives some insight on exactly how TV shows change as they move through the development process.
"Jaime was originally working in a lab. She was going to be assigned to these chimpanzees. The chimpanzees were going to Dr. Will Anthros, who was using them for experimentation. He would come down to get the chimpanzees and [Jaime and Will] sort of fell in love during that time," Smilovic said in July at a press conference in Beverly Hills, Calif. "We were looking for an organic way for her to be talking to the chimpanzees in sign language. Of course, the chimpanzees disappeared. The lab disappeared. The sign language and the deaf sister stayed, but now she's disappeared as well."
Meanwhile over at The CW's "Gosip Girl" (9 tonight, WPCW), which has been renewed for a full first season, the writers have brown noses from kissing up to their boss, CW Entertainment president Dawn Ostroff. How come? Because they used her name in last week's episode. The Ostroff Treatment Center played a key role in the plot.
