Police investigate domestic involving Steelers' Davenport
Saturday, October 06, 2007

Police in Cleveland are investigating a domestic dispute involving Steelers running back Najeh Davenport on Thursday night.

No charges have been filed.

The domestic violence unit is reviewing an incident on 115th Street between Mr. Davenport and Anita Person, 27, the mother of his 5-year-old.

Police said the dispute was over custody of the child.

Officers received three 911 calls between 8:45 p.m. and 9:02 p.m.

In the calls, police said, "allegations of domestic violence were made involving Mr. Davenport."

Under Ohio law, police must arrest "the primary physical aggressor" in domestics, but in this case they didn't know who that was and couldn't charge anyone.

Detectives will interview everyone involved and present their findings to the Cleveland city prosecutor for review, police said. The investigation is expected to take at least a week.

Mr. Davenport, listed at 6-feet-1 and 247 pounds, played four years for the Green Bay Packers before joining the Steelers last year.

In 2002, shortly before he was drafted by the Packers, Miami Shores, Fla., police arrested him on charges of breaking into the Barry University dorm room of Mary McCarthy, who was asleep, and defecating in her laundry basket. She said she woke up to find him squatting in her closet.

Mr. Davenport denied the claim.

In a plea deal later that year, he agreed to perform community service and prosecutors dropped charges of burglary and criminal mischief.
