Submit your Pitt football question

A week from today, the Panthers will take the field against Navy in a game that is an absolute must-win. The team has no confidence right now and is really foundering, but it is amazing how much one win can change the outlook of a team and turn things around.

Q: I know you said Wannstedt is safe for at least another year but if we should we go 2-10 or 3-9, will we at least see a house cleaning of some of the coaching staff?

Marc Tiley, Irwin

ZEISE: I think at this point there are a few changes coming almost regardless of what happens from here on and, yes, I'd expect a few major changes if the floor completely falls out of it like it appears is in the process of happening. That has to happen - it is the first step for a university to send a message to a faltering football coach that the direction of the program needs to change.

Q: Has Dave Wannstedt lost this team?

Will K., Burke, Va.

ZEISE: I'm not sure exactly what that means. It seems to be when any team goes through a losing streak or has a few bad losses in a row the coach reportedly "has lost the team." I think back to 2001 - would you have said Walt Harris had "lost this team" (I know a lot of people did) after opening the season (after winning a meaningless game against a I-AA team) with losses to South Florida (in the Bulls second ever I-A game), getting crushed by Miami, losing at Notre Dame then getting pounded by Syracuse and Boston College by a combined score of 87-17? Do you remember that? I remember after that Boston College game people writing Walt's coaching obituary, the team was being called one of the worst ever and etc., etc. But a funny thing happened - they beat Temple the next week and then ended up reeling off six consecutive wins, including a pounding of NC State in the Tangerine Bowl. I'm not saying that can or will happen here, but the whole "he's lost this team" line is always way over-stated and declared way too early in the season. A lot can happen in the final seven games.

Q: Paul, Back in the spring when Jeff Long announced that Pitt had allowed Clemson out of the contract to play a home and home series in 2010 and 2011 he mentioned that he was currently talking to a number of BCS schools to fill the opening in the schedule. Do you know if these talks have dropped off since he left Pitt? Any idea as to what schools the Pitt athletic department is considering adding to the schedule to fill the void?

Matt Digorlamo, Dorseyville

ZEISE: He apparently was talking to other BCS schools - Arkansas -- And from what I understand football scheduling is on the back burner among priorities until they settle in on an athletic director.
