Grove City's Terra Nova House is listed among top 10 B&Bs
Sunday, September 30, 2007

Grove City's Terra Nova House has been named one of the top 10 Best Overall bed and breakfasts in the United States by www.bedandbreakfast.com.

It was the only B&B recognized in Pennsylvania as an overall winner by the online B&B directory and reservation network, which presents the awards based on reviews by inngoers.

"We're tickled ecstatic pink about this," said Barry Miller, 61, who with his wife Sandy, 57, purchased the quaint Victorian B&B in March 2004. They both had ended second careers in Easton, Northampton County, and were looking for a new venture when they bought the Mercer County inn.

Located about a mile from the Prime One outlets off of Interstate 79, the inn has five themed rooms. About 30 percent of its guests come from Canada, seeking discounted shopping at the outlets. Rates range from $79 to $115 a night, double occupancy.

Built in 1901, the building served as a home for several families for more than 80 years. It was purchased by a local attorney in the 1980s who restored the Victorian to its early elegance. It was then turned into a B&B.

"It was a mediocre business when we purchased it," Mr. Miller said. The former owner, who was from Newfoundland, didn't market the inn well and often closed it for part of the year when he visited his homeland.

"We worked very hard for this," Mr. Miller said. The couple kept the themed rooms, but updated decor and put in new carpet. It also stepped up marketing, particularly in Canada, whose residents are attracted to Pennsylvania's tax-free clothing purchases.

Business leaped by 33 percent in 2006 compared to the previous year and current occupancy is ahead of last year's rate, he said.

The awards by www. bedandbreakfast.com were based on reviews posted by inngoers on its site over the last year, said Marti Mayne, spokesperson for the directory based in Austin, Texas.

"We've collected 10,000 reviews. We literally read every review that was posted," she said. "We carefully selected the winners based on the quality and the quantity of reviews."

The other nine best overall B&Bs on the list include Storybook Inn, Versailles, Ky.; High Pointe Inn, West Barnstable, Mass.; Inn at Harbour Ridge, Osage Beach, Mo.; Garden Gate Get-A-Way, Millersburg, Ohio; Sobotta Manor B&B, Mount Airy, N.C.; Bloomsbury Inn, Camden, S.C.; The Phillips-Yates-Snowden House, Charleston, S.C.; South Court Inn, Luray, Va.; Woodstocker Inn, Woodstock, Vt.

This was the third year for these awards, Ms. Mayne said. The site, www.bedandbreakfast.com, also rated top B&Bs in Canada and gave awards in other categories.

It was the first time that Terra Nova made the list. Among the comments offered by guests was this one: "We won't stay anywhere else and try to come at least once a year if not twice. Another inn or hotel could never compare!"

Terra Nova House, a 3-Diamond B&B, is at 322 W. Poplar St., Grove City, 16127; 1-877-837-6682; www.terranovahouse.com.
