WPIAL Class AA Roundup: No. 5 Steel Valley starts fast, routs Brentwood, 41-14

Steel Valley, the No. 5 team in Class AA, blitzed visiting Brentwood for 21 second-quarter points last night en route to a 41-14 Century Conference victory.

Tyrell Smith carried 21 times for 251 yards for the Ironmen (5-0, 5-0), scoring on runs of 60, 45 and 7 yards.

Quarterback Ryan Sabo got the Ironmen rolling with touchdown runs of 34 and 32 yards in the first half.

Brentwood's Eric Coxon entered the game as the WPIAL's No. 3 passer, but was 12 of 24 for 178 yards, most coming after the outcome had been decided.

Steel Valley has yielded just 33 points in five games while racking up 170 points.

Beaver Falls 28, Sto-Rox 6

Beaver Falls (4-1, 4-1) limited Sto-Rox quarterback Paul Jones, who entered the game as the WPIAL's leading passer, to 101 yards and seven completions in its Midwestern Athletic Conference win against the Vikings (3-2, 2-2). Cody Cook ran for three touchdowns and finished with 175 yards on 26 carries to pace the Tigers.

Beaver 18, Center 13

The Bobcats (5-0, 4-0) remained unbeaten by posting a tough road win at Center (2-3, 2-3) in Midwestern Athletic Conference play. Alex George carried only six times but scored on runs of 55 and 16 yards for the Bobcats. Beaver outgained Center, 171-87, on the ground.

Aliquippa 47, Ellwood City 0

Aliquippa (4-1, 4-0) rolled to its Midwestern Athletic Conference win at Ellwood City (0-5, 0-5). Aliquippa, No. 2 in the WPIAL and No. 4 in the PIAA, raced to a 33-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Ellwood City has been outscored, 218-7, on the season. Jonathan Baldwin scored a pair of touchdowns for the Quips.

New Brighton 35, Quaker Valley 14

Eric Walker scored three touchdowns to lead New Brighton (3-2, 2-2) past Quaker Valley (1-4, 1-4) in their Midwestern Athletic Conference matchup. New Brighton led 35-0 before the Quakers were able to get on the board. Walker finished with 130 yards on 12 carries.

South Fayette 35, Carlynton 6

South Fayette (5-0, 4-0) continued its roll with a Century Conference win against visiting Carlynton (0-5, 0-5). Dillon Sauers gained a game-high 109 yards on 15 carries, including one score, and caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Fontana. Ken Morgan added a pair of short touchdown runs for the Lions.

Jeannette 40, McGuffey 0

Jeannette (5-0, 5-0) cruised to the Interstate Conference win at McGuffey (2-3, 2-2). Jeannette, the No. 1 team in the PIAA, led 27-0 at the half. The Jayhawks' James Derry opened the scoring with a 22-yard punt return and Kenny Grant closed it with a 50-yard interception return. Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor rushed seven times for 55 yards and a touchdown and completed 5 of 12 passes for 114 yards.

Greensburg Central Catholic 14, Yough 10

Greensburg Central Catholic, No. 3 in the WPIAL, earned a tough Interstate victory at Yough (1-4, 1-4). Greensburg Central Catholic (5-0, 4-0) needed a goal-line stand in the final minutes to preserve the win. Daunte Weaver-Johnson hauled in a 86-yard touchdown pass from Adam Palcic earlier in the fourth quarter to put Greensburg ahead. Palcic was 6 of 9 for 158 yards.

East Allegheny 35, Southmoreland 0

Monte Ashby, who entered the game as the No. 2 rusher in the WPIAL, scampered for 238 yards and two touchdowns in East Allegheny's (4-1, 4-1) Interstate Conference victory over Southmoreland (2-3, 2-2). Ashby scored on runs of 71 yards in the second quarter and 31 yards in the fourth.

Ford City 56, Northgate 0

Ford City, (5-0, 4-0), rolled to a 42-0 halftime lead en route to its easy Allegheny Conference win at Northgate (1-4, 1-4). Ford City, the No. 4 team in the WPIAL, got three touchdown runs from Carter Haponski and a pair from Sean Kirley all before halftime.

Washington 28, Brownsville 7

Washington (2-3, 2-3) struggled early but pulled away from Brownsville (0-5, 0-5) in the second half of their Century Conference game. Shawn Vaughn scored three touchdowns to lead the Washington offense.

Freeport 21, Burrell 14

Freeport (2-3, 2-3) stunned previously unbeaten Burrell (4-1, 3-1) Allegheny Conference play. Freeport spotted Burrell a 7-0 then reeled off 21 unanswered points. Andrew Vidra's 58-yard touchdown run in the third quarter broke a 7-7 tie and put Freeport ahead to stay. Vidra finished with 99 yards rushing on 9 attempts.

South Allegheny 30, Charleroi 19

South Allegheny (1-4, 1-4) chalked up its first victory with its Century Conference victory over visiting Charleroi (1-4, 1-3). Cash Cortazzo rushed for a game-high 116 yards on 26 carries for South Allegheny. Cortazzo and Josh Farner each scored a pair of touchdowns.

Deer Lakes 20, West Shamokin 0

Deer Lakes broke into the victory column with its Allegheny Conference win at West Shamokin (2-3, 1-3).

Mars 45, Cornell 22

WPIAL leading rusher Bill Bair erupted for 305 yards on 24 carries in Mars' Tri-County North Conference rout of visiting Cornell (0-5, 0-5). Bair scored four touchdowns on runs all of which came from with 7 yards. Shane Kaclik added three rushing touchdowns for the Planets (4-1, 4-0).

Riverside 61, Neshannock 0

Riverside (4-1, 4-0) rolled past Neshannock (1-4, 0-4) Tri-County North Conference play.

Union 36, Shenango 17

Union (1-4, 1-4) broke into the win column with its Tri-County North Conference win over Shenango (1-4, 1-3).

South Park 20, Waynesburg 14

Waynesburg (0-5) scored its first points of the season, but its wasn't enough to pull out a non-conference win at South Park (2-3). Tarran Senay rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown for South Park.

Riverside 61, Neshannock 0

Jake Wickline scored four touchdowns and Josh Gibson two to lead the Panthers (4-1, 4-1) to a Tri-County North win against Neshannock (1-4, 0-4).

Mohawk 30, Freedom 28

Mohawk (4-1) sqeeked past visiting Freedom (1-4) in overtime in their non-confererence matchup.

DuBois 26, Kittanning 6

DuBois, a Class AAAA team from PIAA District 9, defeated Kittanning in their non-conference game. Dan Ober scored Kittanning's lone touchdown on a 72-yard pass from Ross Harmo in the final quarter.
