Springdale likely to give Clairton a bear of a game
Friday, September 28, 2007
Forget LSU-Florida, USC-UCLA, Pitt-West Virginia. The Fumbler prefers high school rivalries.

Actually, he would love to see rivalries develop out of matchups that are not likely to occur. For example, wouldn't Moon vs. Mars be out of this world, especially if they play in Apollo, Pa.? How about Yough-Knoch, with the bands performing halftime tributes to the Three Stooges (nyuk-nyuk-nyuk)?

An amateur cartographer, the Fumbler would revel in a doubleheader featuring East Allegheny-West Allegheny and North Allegheny-South Allegheny. And watching a Plum-Fort Cherry game would be a fruitful experience.

Steel Valley and Union would be an ideal rivalry, especially if they were blue-collar teams. The games would be played in Industry.

Apparently, The Fumbler let his imagination affect his decision-making last week, as his prognostication record was a subpar 48-17 last week (.738 pct.). For the season, he is 200-64 (.758).

Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top matchups:

Clairton (3-1, 1-0) at Springdale (4-0, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. today: The blemish on Clairton's record came last week in a loss to John F. Kennedy, one of the top teams in Ohio's smallest classification. Forget about that. In WPIAL Class A, the Bears are No. 1, although No. 3 Springdale could keep it close. Winner: Clairton.

Mt. Lebanon (3-1, 0-0) at McKeesport (3-1, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. today: Mt. Lebanon quietly has put together a nice record, but the Blue Devils' three wins are against teams with a combined record of 2-10. This game will tell a lot more about Mt. Lebanon. Winner: McKeesport.

Indiana (3-1, 1-1) at Pine-Richland (3-1, 1-1), 7:30 p.m. today: Indiana has not played the strongest of schedules, but this team is better than a lot of people think. Unfortunately for Indiana, Pine-Richland got a wakeup call last week when it lost to Knoch. Winner: Pine-Richland.

Beaver Falls (3-1, 3-1) at Sto-Rox (3-1, 2-1), 7:30 p.m. today: Beaver Falls must deal with the WPIAL's leading passer (Paul Jones) and the league leader in receptions (Isaiah Scott). But this game will be won on the lines, and that's where Beaver Falls has an edge. Winner: Beaver Falls.

Brentwood (3-1, 3-1) at Steel Valley (4-0, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. today: This is a showdown between two of the best quarterbacks in Class AA -- Brentwood's Eric Coxon and Steel Valley's Ryan Sabo. While the focus of the game might be on the quarterbacks, the difference will be Steel Valley's defense, which has allowed 19 points in four games. Winner: Steel Valley.
