Moon Area graduate Matt Dowdell threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns for Seton Hill in Saturday's 34-27 overtime win over Glenville State.
It was the Griffins' first win in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, first as an NCAA Division II team and first overtime game.
Dowdell, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore, completed 12 of 24 passes, including a 6-yard touchdown pass to Derek Thompson in the first half. He also connected with Calvin Stephens on a 25-yard pass in overtime, which gave the Griffins the winning touchdown.
In three games, Dowdell has completed 32 of 68 passes for 453 yards and four touchdowns, while throwing only three interceptions.
Also, Ellwood City graduate Andrew DeMase is one of Seton Hill's defensive leaders.
DeMase, a 6-2, 195-pound junior free safety, had five solo tackles, six assists, and one fumble recovery for the Griffins in Saturday's win over Glenville State.
In three games, DeMase has 10 solo tackles and 15 assists.
Net gains for Beaver Falls grad
Beaver Falls graduate Hilary Newman recorded four victories for the Westminster College women's tennis team in a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference wins over the weekend.
The Titans posted 9-0 victories over Washington & Jefferson and Bethany to improve their conference record to 4-1, 6-3 overall.
Newman, a sophomore, registered a singles and doubles victory in both matches. She has a 7-2 record as Westminster's No. 3 singles player, and is 6-3 in doubles competition.
Besong's first touchdown
Ambridge Area graduate Craig Besong caught his first touchdown pass for Washington & Jefferson College in Saturday's 56-26 win over Oberlin.
Besong, a 6-3, 195-pound sophomore wide reciever, caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Swallow. He finished the game with four catches for 89 yards, and for the season has six catches for 96 yards.
Serving up a winner
Beaver Area graduate Kristy Borza, a junior on the University of Pittsburgh's women's tennis team, won the Flight A singles championship at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational at West Point, N.Y.
She defeated Denise Harijanto from the University of Buffalo, 6-4, 6-2, in the title match.
Borza, a three-year starter, had a 53-13 singles record and 41-22 doubles record in her first two seasons of competition.
