I have no idea where to start about Saturday's game other than to say it was one of the worst overall performances by a Pitt team -- from an execution and organizational standpoint -- that I have witnessed in my six plus seasons covering this team. The first half it really reminded me of some of those teams from the early 1990's -- the Panthers couldn't make a play, when they did make a play there was a penalty or a turnover or something else bad happened and it seemed like every move that was made blew up in the coaches' faces. It was a disaster on so many levels. But this is one game and the Panthers still have eight remaining to try and play better football and I really believe there are more teams on the schedule Pitt will have a chance to beat if they just play well. I have always said, judge the team by the entire body of work. But thus far, it hasn't been very promising.
Q: I understand why there had been some hesitation to rush Bostick out on the field. However, I have a hard time understanding why McCoy only got the minority of carries against UConn. I was not able to watch or listen to the game, so I accept there may be many things the write-ups don't capture.
Can you help me out?
Jonathan Keim, Bellefonte, Pa.
ZEISE: No I can't help you out and the explanation that Dave Wannstedt gave was that he thinks LaRod Stephens-Howling is a good player who deserves a chance to be a part of it. But he announced today that LeSean McCoy will start Saturday against Virginia and I think that is probably the last we will see of the split carries stuff. LaRod Stephens-Howling can help the team in a variety of ways, but McCoy has to -- especially with a true freshman quarterback -- be the focus of the offense.
Q: If we have a losing season, would you bring Dave Wannstedt back in 2008?
Wayne Bubnis, Bethlehem, Pa.
ZEISE: You have to give him one more season at the very least. He deserves four full seasons, especially since this seems to be one of those seasons where everything that can possibly go wrong is and, thus, it is hard to evaluate fully where the program is at. There are clearly some things that could have been done better Saturday night, but by the same token, even the most harsh critics of this coaching staff have to admit that the quarterback situation, combined with the loss of Derek Kinder, Elijah Fields, Gus Mustakas, Chris Jacobson and now possibly Jason Pinkston and the fact that Mike McGlynn is not yet 100 percent healthy, has contributed at least a little to the problems this team is having? If this season continues to spiral downward, there could and likely should be some changes on the staff ordered from the administration -- particularly if a new athletic director with no loyalty to this staff is hired and in place -- which is usually a not- so-subtle hint that things need to improve quickly.
