Pirates Notebook: GM expected to be named tomorrow
Monday, September 24, 2007

CHICAGO -- The Pirates continue to prepare for a news conference tomorrow to name Neal Huntington their new general manager.

There was a report yesterday that the Pirates are reconsidering their choice because president Frank Coonelly is upset that Huntington's name became public a few days ago.

"We are not changing direction or rethinking our position," Coonelly said in a statement. "Instead, we are moving forward with our search process in an extremely thorough and deliberate manner.

"As I stated earlier this week, in fairness to the process and each of the candidates, I would not respond to speculation and rumor regarding any specific candidates who are being considered for our general manager position.

"This is a critical hire. It is important that we find the right person for the general manager position who can move our baseball operations forward. I am extremely confident that we will accomplish that goal."

That indicates Huntington, a special assistant to general manager Mark Shapiro of the Cleveland Indians, will become the official selection tomorrow.

Baby on board

Jack Wilson did not rejoin the Pirates yesterday as scheduled.

The shortstop was still home in California, where his wife, Julie, gave birth to the couple's third child Thursday.

Wilson should be back in time for tomorrow night's game.

Fourth time a charm?

Tracy said he doesn't know if Tom Gorzelanny will get another start next weekend. The left-hander has tried three times to get his 15th victory.

"I can't see why not," Gorzelanny said of making a final start. "I want to finish strong and go into the offseason feeling good."

Torres miffed

Pirates reliever Salomon Torres said Saturday he didn't like the way Alfonso Soriano stood at the plate watching his home run.

"I didn't do anything wrong," Soriano said. "I didn't even look at him. I didn't look at the ball. I hit it and started to run. If he's mad, I don't know why."

A park with history

Nyjer Morgan, who has moved from California to Chicago, used to walk around Wrigley Field.

Now that he has played in the venerable ballpark?

"This park is like the Yankee Stadium or the Fenway Park of the National League."

Scheduled starters

The Pirates are scheduled to start Ian Snell, Matt Morris and Paul Maholm against Arizona beginning tomorrow night.

Zach Duke showed enough in his start Saturday that he'll start again Friday night against St. Louis.

Buried treasures

Reliever Shawn Chacon again was unavailable yesterday because of stiffness in his right elbow.

Freddy Sanchez went 7 for 39 on the 10-game trip.

Arizona is scheduled to start left-hander Doug Davis tomorrow night, then right-handers Livan Hernandez and Brandon Webb.
