District Colleges: Duquesne going with QB shift
Saturday, September 22, 2007

Duquesne will have a different starting quarterback for the first time since 2005 when it plays at Sacred Heart (1-1) at 1 p.m. today.

After coming off the bench to provide a spark in a 28-17 loss at Brown last Saturday and sharing time with the first unit in practice this week, Kevin Rombach earned the starting job. He will replace junior Scott Knapp, who has started all 19 games when he has been healthy since he came to Duquesne in 2005.

"They'll both play," Duquesne coach Jerry Schmitt said. "We've always had competition between the two, in the spring and over the summer. We would prefer to go with one quarterback, but it's a good situation to have two really good quarterbacks."

The Dukes, whose losses have come against the two strongest teams on their schedule, Bucknell and Brown, are 0-2 for the first time since 1991 when they finished 0-9 under Dan McCann as a Division III team. They currently are in Division I-AA and next season will begin offering athletic scholarships.

"Our biggest challenge this week has been trying to make the players understand they're still a good football team," Schmitt said. "Rombach definitely brings a little more mobility to the position and a little more enthusiasm with his emotion. Scott is pretty much a cool customer."

Rombach, a redshirt sophomore from Central Dauphin High near Harrisburg, sat out last season. He completed 18 of 28 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown in 2 1/2 quarters against Brown with one interception.

"We were struggling a bit on offense and we decided it was time to go with a change," Schmitt said of the switch to Rombach, who didn't play in the opening 28-19 loss at Bucknell.

Rombach started two games and played most of a third -- all wins -- when Knapp was injured in the final three games of the 2005 season. Knapp, who completed 4 of 12 passes for 71 yards against Brown, has thrown for 4,547 yards and 40 touchdowns in his career.

Schmitt said he is more concerned about a depleted defensive backfield with the loss of injured starters Aaron Fitzpatrick and Tony Colaizzi than he is the quarterback situation.

"We'll be fine at quarterback," Schmitt said. "We're not so sure what we'll be able to do in the secondary."
