City police have arrested a Penn Hills man on charges that he shot and mutilated a 4-year-old dog in Homewood after getting calls from outraged residents who said the suspect bragged about killing the pit bull mix.
Jamarow Trowery, 30, who was on probation for federal gun charges, turned himself over to police yesterday.
Mr. Trowery, 30, spent several hours in phone negotiations with police before he turned himself in to officers at the Zone 5 police station in East Liberty on charges of cruelty to animals and a violation of the Uniform Firearms Act.
Police said Mr. Trowery shot the dog named Buju in the torso, severed its right paw and attempted to crudely decapitate the animal. The dog was found on Monday in a garbage bag at the corner of Susquehanna and Pitt streets in Homewood.
"It is very gruesome," said Pittsburgh police Cmdr. RaShall Brackney. "It shocks the conscience of a person when you think about it."
It was an outraged community's tips that ultimately led to Mr. Trowery's arrest.
Cmdr. Brackney said Mr. Trowery did not admit to shooting the dog. Instead, she said people who had heard Mr. Trowery boast about killing the animal called police.
She said she was awaiting on reports to determine if the dog was shot before it was mutilated . She said investigators thought the dog was shot in the back of the head before they realized that the amount of trauma to the dog's head was due to attempts to severe the head from the body.
