Aliquippa will sing: "Hail to Pit"
Friday, September 21, 2007
The Fumbler has had a traumatic two weeks. And two close calls.

He was the acclaimed film editor of the New England Patriots when they went to Super Bowl XX. The Fumbler, alas, was fired the day after the big game because he had failed to record any of the Bears' practices. Winning coach Mike Ditka had found out about his covert operations and destroyed his cameras and blackened both eyes.

Two decades later, in light of the Bill Belichick scandal, The Fumbler feared his secret would get out. Until now, it hadn't.

Then last week, his college roommate, O.J. Simpson, was arrested again. The Juice wasn't upset merely because his memorabilia was being auctioned. The items on the block included several owned by his buddy: a ticket from the 1956 Braddock-Homestead football game, Chuck Wagner's Oakmont letter jacket, Deuce Skurcenski's first red marker.

The old frat brothers have remained close. The Fumbler navigated dozens of golf courses in pursuit of the real killers in the Simpson murder case. Simpson helped in the search for the real prognosticators.

The Fumbler is quite the forecaster himself. He had a 51-14 (.784 percentage) record last week, and is 152-47 (.763) for the season.

Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top matchups:

Beaver Falls (3-0 overall, 3-0 in conference) at Aliquippa (2-1, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- For a high school fan, it doesn't get much better than watching a big game at "The Pit" in Aliquippa. Aliquippa is ranked No. 2 in WPIAL Class AA and Beaver Falls No. 3. The Quips have won 15 of the past 18 in this series and three in a row by a combined score of 112-18. With talented running back Todd Thomas, Beaver Falls won't get blown out this time. But the Tigers won't win, either. Winner: Aliquippa.

Montour (3-0, 1-0) at New Castle (3-0, 1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Montour is off to its best start in the past 12 years. New Castle is off to its best start since 2002. Montour has won each of its games by seven points and this Class AAA Parkway Conference clash will be close, too. Montour's defense will be the difference. Winner: Montour.

Valley (3-0, 3-0) at Ford City (3-0, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Both teams come into this Class AA Allegheny Conference game unbeaten. But Ford City is on a different level than Valley -- and it's because of defense. Ford City has allowed a total of seven points in three games. Winner: Ford City.

Canon-McMillan (2-1, 0-0) at Shaler (3-0, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Canon-McMillan's Mike Hull is one of the WPIAL's leading rushers as a sophomore. But Shaler is on the cusp of being ranked in the top five in Class AAAA and also trying to go 4-0 for the first time since 2000. Winner: Shaler.

Perry (2-1, 2-0) vs. Allderdice (2-1, 2-0) at Cupples Stadium, 7:30 p.m. today -- Allderdice has not defeated Perry in a City League game since 1982. Since then, the Dragons have lost 26 in a row to Perry. Is it time for the streak to end? Winner: Perry.
