Andrew Morrissey, a 17-month-old from Maryland, has received a combination liver/kidney transplant, with organs donated by his father and grandmother.

His surgeon, Dr. George V. Mazariegos, said, "Andrew is doing well. His liver and kidney are working very well."

Andrew suffered from a congenital kidney and liver disorder known as autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease. He had one kidney removed at 4 days old (it was double the size of a normal kidney), and the other taken out just a day shy of 1 month old. He had developed severe complications of cholangitis (inflammation of the bile duct). On dialysis since his second kidney removal, Andrew had a liver that was diseased, but functioning. However, that was not expected to last.

The three patients continued to be closely watched in intensive care yesterday.
