Pitt quiet on Fields' status
Dixon taking wait-and-see approach
Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Levance Fields was not at practice yesterday.

The Pitt basketball team went through offseason workouts yesterday without point guard Levance Fields, who was arrested early Sunday morning and faces four charges after an altercation with a Pittsburgh police officer.

Every other Pitt player went through workouts with Pitt's coaching staff and later scrimmaged at the Petersen Events Center. There was no explanation given for Fields' absence.

Pitt coach Jamie Dixon has not issued any public statement on what disciplinary action he will take with Fields. He was on the road recruiting over the weekend and returned to town yesterday. Dixon could be gathering information about the incident from all parties before handing down a punishment, but he seemed to indicate in a statement made Sunday that he would wait for the case to play out in court.

In his statement, Dixon said: "At this juncture, we will let the judicial process run its course before determining what disciplinary action is necessary."

Fields' preliminary hearing is set for Monday.

Even if he does act or has already acted, not all disciplinary action meted out to Pitt student-athletes is made public.

Dixon refused to comment on his star player for the second day in a row, and his other players were instructed not to speak with reporters after the workout.

Regardless of what action the athletic department takes, Fields could be subject to punishment by the university's student affairs judicial system. According to the university's Web site, "in some cases, off-campus conduct may also be subject to disciplinary action by the university."

It was not clear yesterday if the university has disciplined Fields. University spokeman John Fedele said, "At this point, I cannot comment on internal punishments, if there are any."

As of yesterday afternoon, Fields had not yet hired a lawyer to represent him in the case. He is charged with aggravated assault, disarming a police officer, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. Fields was stunned with a Taser when he allegedly attempted to grab a police officer's duty belt and weapon at 1:50 a.m. Sunday morning outside Pure nightclub in the Strip District. He also allegedly struck the officer in the chest.

Fields, who turned 20 in June, is a two-year starter at point guard and led the team in assists last season. He also averaged 9.2 points per game and was named second-team all-Big East.

The Panthers begin practice in one month. The first game is Nov. 9.

Dixon is not changing his plans for the week in the wake of Fields' arrest. He will be inducted Thursday into the Texas Christian University Athletic Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. According to a Pitt spokesman, Dixon is still planning to attend that event.
