WPIAL Class AA Roundup: Brentwood QB throws for 319 in 40-14 victory

Brentwood, the No. 4 team in Class AA, got an outstanding performance from quarterback Erik Coxon in a 40-14 Century Conference win at South Allegheny.

Coxon completed 16 of his 17 pass attempts for 319 yards and four touchdowns. Coxon connected with Akeem Moore and Juston Morgan for two touchdowns apiece.

Morgan also returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter for the Spartans (3-0, 3-0). South Allegheny fell to 0-3 overall and in conference play.

Coxon has passed for 571 yards and eight touchdowns on the season.

Aliquippa 26, Freedom 0

Aliquippa, the No. 2 team in Class AA, blanked Freedom (1-2, 1-2) in a Midwestern Conference game. Aliquippa (2-1, 2-0) limited Freedom to 51 yards of total offense.

Beaver Falls 28, Center 7

Beaver Falls, the No. 3 team in Class AA, defeated visiting Center (1-2, 1-2) in this Midwestern Conference game. Todd Thomas ran for three touchdowns and gained 140 yards on 17 rushes for Beaver Falls (3-0, 3-0). Thomas also passed for a touchdown.

Beaver 20, New Brighton 13

Manny Cutlip's 3-yard run in overtime pushed Beaver (3-0, 2-0) to this Midwestern Conference win against visiting New Brighton (1-2, 1-2).

Cutlip rushed for 108 yards on 17 carries and also scored on runs of 54 and 1 yards.

New Brighton's Nate Johnson's second field goal of the game from 32 yards in the fourth quarter sent the contest into overtime.

Quaker Valley 21, Ellwood City 0

Quaker Valley (1-2, 1-2) blanked Ellwood City (0-3, 0-3) in this Midwestern Conference game, which was called because of lightning with 7:24 left in the fourth quarter.

Steel Valley 30, Seton-LaSalle 13

Ryan Sabo scored two touchdowns to lead Steel Valley (3-0, 3-0) past Seton-LaSalle (1-2, 1-1) in the Century Conference. Tyrell Smith rushed for 108 yards on 19 carries to aid the Steel Valley attack.

South Park 20, Charleroi 7

South Park (1-2, 1-2) beat visiting Charleroi (0-3, 0-2) in the Century Conference. Justin Hale connected with Matt Gal on a 41-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to put the Eagles up for good.

Burgettstown 34, Carlynton 6

Burgettstown (2-1, 2-1) jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and coasted to a win at Carlynton (0-3, 0-3) in the Century Conference. Nick Tasz and Dan Conley each had two touchdown runs for Burgettstown.

Jeannette 53, Yough 0

Jeannette continued its torrid pace with a rout of visiting Yough in Interstate Conference play. Jeannette is ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL and PIAA in Class AA.

Terrelle Pryor rushed for 127 yards on nine carries and completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 120 yards in the game. Jeannette has outscored its opponents, 155-12, this season.

Greensburg Central Catholic 41, Brownsville 6

Greensburg Central Catholic, the No. 5 team in Class AA, had an easy time with Brownsville (0-3, 0-3) in this Interstate Conference game. Daunte Weaver-Johnson rushed for two touchdowns and 103 yards to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (3-0, 2-0).

East Allegheny 26, Washington 20

East Allegheny (2-1, 2-1) jumped to an early 14-0 lead, but had to come back to post an Interstate Conference win against visiting Washington (1-2, 1-2). Monte Ashby ran for 262 yards on 27 carries for East Allegheny. Ashby scored the winning touchdown on a 9-yard run with 51 seconds to play.

Southmoreland 28, Waynesburg 0

Southmoreland (2-1, 2-0) shut out Waynesburg in Interstate Conference play. It was the third consecutive time Waynesburg (0-3, 0-3) has been blanked this season. Waynesburg has been outscored by its opposition, 78-0, this season.

Burrell 34, West Shamokin 0

Burrell (3-0, 2-0) blanked West Shamokin (1-2, 1-2) in Allegheny Conference play. Seth Napierkowski scored two touchdowns for Burrell.

Valley 28, Freeport 24

Valley (3-0, 3-0) edged Freeport (0-3, 0-2) in this Allegheny Conference game. Garrett Sekanick connected with Troy Hill for a 17-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to provide the winning points.

Northgate 38, Deer Lakes 35

Northgate (1-2, 1-2) outscored Deer Lakes (0-3, 0-3) in this Allegheny Conference shootout. Pat Carr ran for a game-high 167 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Northgate. The Flames outgained Deer Lakes, 420-388, in total offense.

Ford City 35, Kittanning 0

Carter Haponski scored three touchdowns to lead Ford City (3-0, 2-0) in a surprisingly easy Allegheny Conference win at Kittanning (2-1, 2-1). Haponski finished with 113 yards rushing on nine carries. Ford City has outscored its opposition, 84-7, this season.

Riverside 45, Cornell 0

Riverside (2-1, 2-1) routed Cornell (0-3, 0-3) in the Tri-County North Conference. Jake Wickline scored three touchdowns and rushed for a game-high 137 yards on 22 carries to pace Riverside.

Laurel 42, Union 20

Laurel (2-1, 2-1) got past Union (0-3, 0-3) in this Tri-County North Conference game.

Mohawk 24, Neshannock 12

D.J. Wholeslagle rushed for 160 yards on 20 attempts to pace Mohawk (3-0, 3-0) to a Tri-County North Conference win against visiting Neshannock (1-2, 0-2).

Mohawk jumped to an early 16-0 lead, but it wasn't until Wholeslagle scored on a 46-yard in the fourth quarter that the game was put away.

South Fayette 14, McGuffey 13

South Fayette (3-0) overcame an early 10-point deficit to defeat McGuffey (1-2) in non-conference play. Jon Taglianetti passed and rushed for a touchdown for South Fayette.

Sto-Rox 27, Slippery Rock 23

Sto-Rox (2-1) slipped past Slippery Rock in this non-conference matchup. Paul Jones passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns for Sto-Rox. Kevin Doubt also rushed for 201 yards on nine attempts for the Vikings.
