County Councilman Vince Gastgeb, R-Bethel Park, said it's dangerous for people to park on the shoulder of the highway leading to Pittsburgh International Airport while they wait for travelers to call to pick them up.

To rectify that, Mr. Gastgeb has proposed s free-parking area that will give people a place to park so they can wait for the call and then drive to the curb at the baggage claim area. He said the parking lot would have to be far enough from the terminal so people wouldn't be tempted to park there and board an airplane.

Mr. Gastgeb said he has seen similar parking areas in Chicago, Boston and Fort Myers, Fla.

The measure was sent to council's Committee on Government Reform.
