A memorial tribute to Joe Chiodo, who for five decades ran Chiodo's Tavern in Homestead, will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the historic Pump House at The Waterfront (east of Lowe's), Munhall.

Mr. Chiodo died Aug. 26 at age 89, and his funeral was private, so "his many friends did not have the opportunity to celebrate his life and accomplishments," said John and Linda Asmonga.

The regional history researchers are members of the Battle of Homestead Foundation that is sponsoring the event.

The free gathering is to include a slide show, tributes by customers and friends, and an open microphone for anyone else who wants to say a few brief words about Mr. Chiodo and his iconic tavern, now gone, but missed by many for its "Mystery Sandwich," unusual decor that featured everything from pictures to bras, local color and camaraderie.
