Activities and events around the region commemorate 9/11 anniversary

Gov. Ed Rendell has issued a proclamation designating today as Patriot Day and has ordered flags at state facilities to be flown at half-staff in memory of the thousands of Americans who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The proclamation encourages "all citizens to observe this day with a moment of silence, remembrance ceremony, or expression of gratitude and patriotism and to make a personal pledge to honor and cherish the freedom, equality, and peace that defines America."

Following is a list of other activities and events around the region to commemorate the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Downtown

First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, 320 Sixth Ave. will hold a 9/11 remembrance at 12:15 p.m. Dr. Bruce Bickel, a pastor and businessman, is the featured speaker. Pastors Dr. Stuart D. Broberg and the Rev. David J.W. Brown will assist with the service, which includes special music and hymn singing.

Somerset

The Temporary Flight 93 National Memorial, located at 109 W. Main St., is open to the public from dawn to dusk today. The traditional reading of the names of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and the tolling of the bells of remembrance takes place at 9:55 a.m. at the temporary memorial, along with the laying of wreaths. There is no seating during this ceremony. Parking is immediately adjacent to the memorial.

Somerset

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police World Trade Center Traveling Memorial is on display at the Quality Inn, 215 Ramada Road, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. For more information, visit www.pa-fop98.org or www.wtctm.com or call 1-814-443-4646.

Moon

Robert Morris University is paying tribute to those killed on 9/11 with an American flag memorial on the front lawn of the Edward A. Nicholson Center on the Moon campus.

The display of 2,977 flags is part of the Young America Foundation's 9/11 Never Forget Project. In addition, the campus bell tower will chime 11 times at 9:11 a.m., and the campus community will observe a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks. The flag of honor, containing the names of all victims of 9/11, hangs inside the Nicholson Center.



The Army Reserve Headquarters, 99th Regional Readiness Command, will hold a memorial service and place a wreath at 9 a.m. today.

The service also will honor more than 4,000 service members who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since the war on terror began, eight of whom were serving in 99th units in Iraq. The 99th has more than 1,700 soldiers mobilized.

South Park

The South Park Township Board of Supervisors, in conjunction with Windover Hills United Methodist Church, will sponsor a remembrance ceremony at 7 p.m. tonight. The informal gathering, which is to include a helicopter flyover, patriotic songs and the distribution of American flags, will take place at Sunny Slope, located in the Allegheny County park. Boy Scouts are to collect old, worn flags that will be retired at a later date during a formal ceremony. Rain site is the Windover church.

California, Pa.

California University of Pennsylvania is hosting two presentations by Dr. Stephen R. Covey in the Steele Hall auditorium.

The first presentation, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tonight, is titled "Strengthening Relationships: Community, Family and Friends" and follows a special student program at 6:30 p.m.

The second, from 8 a.m. to noon tomorrow, is titled "Insights on Leadership: Great Leaders, Great Teams, Great Results."
