Obituary: Thomas A. Daley / Former prosecutor, long-distance runner

Thomas A. Daley, a former assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania and a longtime marathon runner, died Saturday from complications related to a stroke. He was 75.

Mr. Daley, of McCandless, grew up on the North Side and attended North Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1949.

In 1951, Mr. Daley joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years in Europe and North Africa. While in the Air Force security services, Mr. Daley spent a year at Syracuse University studying Russian.

After his discharge in 1955, Mr. Daley returned to Pittsburgh and attended Duquesne University where he earned a degree in English. Mr. Daley went on to finish at the top of his class at Duquesne University Law School in 1961.

From 1961 to 1962, Mr. Daley worked as the deputy attorney general for the state Department of Justice. In 1963, he was appointed as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, where he served for 26 years as the chief prosecutor in tax fraud cases. In 1973, he became the chief of the criminal trial division. Mr. Daley authored the criminal division procedure manual which continues to serve as a reference guide.

After his retirement as a prosecutor, Mr. Daley worked in the law firm of Brennan, Robins & Daley.

He also was an avid runner, competing and placing in several marathon across the country.

Longtime friend and running partner, Ed Hall of McCandless, said he and Mr. Daley competed in 35 marathons over the years, including the Boston Marathon.

"We were running buddies for 25 years," said Mr. Hall. "We met at the Downtown Rivers Club and we would go running every day after work."

Mr. Daley is survived by three brothers, Michael, of Sandy Lake, Mercer County, John, of Bethel Park, and Coleman, of McCandless; and three sisters, Mary Catherine Bredl and Anna and Catherine Daley, all of McCandless.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. John Neumann Church in Franklin Park.
