Washington coach Bill Britton describes Jeannette's team as "always looking like they're running downhill."
Last night, the Jeannette avalanche came down hard on Washington.
Jeannette's all-everything quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, showed off his talents once again, but the rest of the Jayhawks proved this isn't a one-man show. Jeannette got contributions from a number of players and crushed host Washington, 52-12, in a WPIAL Class AA Interstate Conference game.
This is how easy it was for Jeannette: Pryor didn't play after the first possession of the second half because the game was out of hand.
Just about everyone on Jeannette got in on the fun, even a 5-foot, 95-pound freshman halfback (Mike Penn) who ran for 3 yards late in the game. The Jayhawks had another freshman running back, Jaren Kirkland, wearing No. 76 and running the ball late in the game.
Afterward, Britton sounded in awe of the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked Class AA team in the WPIAL and PIAA. In two games, Jeannette (2-0) has outscored the opposition, 112-12.
"They could've put it to us even more," Britton said. "He [Jeannette coach Ray Reitz] was kind keeping it to 52-12.
"I'll be truthful. I don't see anybody being able to compete with them. I really don't because we have a pretty good football team. ... That team speed they have is everywhere. Our kids played hard and they did everything we asked, but what can you say? And Terrelle didn't even really have to do anything."
But Pryor certainly did plenty in his two-plus quarters of play. He completed 7 of 9 passes for 147 yards and threw for two touchdowns. He carried the ball 8 times for 60 yards and scored two touchdowns. He had a sack on defense. And on his final play of the game, he returned a punt 54 yards. He also had a 40-yard touchdown run called back because of a penalty.
Jeannette finished with 349 yards rushing. Junior Jordan Hall had 37 yards on four carries and fullback Mike Matt 36 on seven. Hall also caught three passes for 81 yards and scored four touchdowns three different ways -- two on receptions, one on a pass reception and one on a return of a fumble recovery.
"I'm not being cocky, but it's kind of like pick your poison with us," Reitz said. "If you take away [Pryor], we have other guys."
About the only bad part of the game was a left knee injury to receiver Jerry Harris. His status is uncertain.
"They just keep coming at you with different guys," Britton said.
Pryor said, "As you see, we have other athletes. Every game, someone else is breaking through."
Jeannette's defense was unbreakable last night. Heck, it barely budged, holding Washington to 42 rushing yards and sacking Washington quarterback Chad Smith five times.
The game started nicely for Washington (1-1) as Joe Ward returned the opening kickoff 77 yards to the Jeannette 20. After picking up a first down, Washington quarterback Chad Smith hit Tom Kelly on a fourth-down, 4-yard touchdown pass to give Washington a 6-0 lead.
But after that, Jeannette's defense took a negative attitude toward Washington. The Little Prexies' next nine plays went for either no gain or negative yardage. Washington finished the first half with minus-23 yards rushing.
"That team speed they have defensively ... at the point of attack, we were getting our blocks, but they're so fast that they were just getting us on the back side," Britton said.
Hall scored Jeannette's first touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Pryor. Pryor had touchdown runs of 1 and 5 yards in the first half. Hall added a 2-yard scoring run in the first half and also a touchdown when he picked up a fumble and returned it 12 yards for a score.
Harris also got in on the act with a 7-yard touchdown run.
On the first possession of the second half, Pryor and Hall hooked up on a 60-yard touchdown pass.
Justin Kettren closed out Jeannette's scoring with a 47-yard touchdown run. Kristopher Fowler scored on a 50-yard run for Washington in the fourth quarter.
