The Hopewell football team fell behind by four points at halftime last night.
Then the Vikings showed why they are considered one of the top teams in WPIAL Class AAA.
With a 14-point fourth-quarter surge, Hopewell (2-0), No. 2 in the Post-Gazette's WPIAL Class AAA rankings, earned a 17-7 victory at West Mifflin (1-1) in a non-conference showdown.
Hopewell assumed a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 19-yard Mitchell Prosen field goal. But the Titans bounced back, getting a 4-yard touchdown run by T.J. Williams for a 7-3 halftime lead.
In the fourth quarter, Hopewell quarterback Mark Javens scored on a 36-yard run and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Joel Kiss to put the Titans away.
Hopewell's Jared Rains finished with 85 yards rushing and Javens complemented him with 83 yards on the ground.
Hopewell outgained the Titans, 310-147, including a 287-94 yard rushing advantage.
City League football
Perry (1-1, 1-0) used a third-quarter touchdown catch from John Henderson to earn a 12-8 come-from-behind victory against Carrick (0-2, 0-1) in a City League matchup at Cupples Stadium. Carrick, which took an 8-6 halftime lead, scored first in the second quarter when Ryan Roeper caught an 8-yard touchdown pass. Perry scored in the second quarter on a 20-yard Erron Farrow run.
Boys' soccer
Thomas Jefferson (2-0, 2-0), the Post-Gazette's WPIAL Class AA No. 1-ranked team, got a goal from Christian Angotti with 2:39 left to earn a 2-1 win against host Elizabeth Forward (3-1, 1-1) in Section 3.
In a non-section battle of two of the top teams in Class AAA, No. 4 Chartiers Valley (3-1) claimed a 3-0 home victory against No. 3 Pine-Richland (1-1). Joe Puleo, Carmen Minella and Nick Raker scored.
Shane Hilliard scored the winning goal with a little more than three minutes left as Ambridge (3-1, 2-0) earned a 2-1 win at Mohawk (0-3, 0-2) in Class AA Section 4.
Riverside (2-1, 2-0) got a late goal from Carter Fox, with 13 minutes remaining, to secure a 1-0 win at Beaver Area (2-2, 1-1) in Class AA Section 4.
Hail to the chiefs
Two boys' soccer players had presidential efforts last night as Zachary Taylor -- who has the same name as the 12th president of the United States -- scored in overtime to push Center (4-0, 2-0) to a 3-2 victory at Montour in Class AA Section 3.
In a 7-0 win for Bentworth (4-0, 2-0) at Geibel (2-2, 1-1) in Class A Section 4, Jon Kennedy -- albeit spelled differently than our 35th president -- scored twice and had two assists.
Lucky No. 14
Yesterday, two WPIAL boys' soccer teams found the net again and again; 14 times each to be precise. In Class AAA Section 1, visiting Norwin drilled Greensburg Salem, 14-0, while in Class A Section 2, host Shady Side Academy downed Elderton by the same score.
Boys' golf
Grant Buckhardt's 1-under 35 helped Peters Township earn a 194-195 win against Division 1 Section 7 foe Mt. Lebanon at Rolling Hills Country Club.
Propelled by even par 35s from Andrew Shakely and Antonio Baroffio at Butler Country Club, Butler beat North Allegheny, 194-207. It was the first time in four years Butler defeated the Tigers.
Grant Nagy fired a 3-under 33 at South Park Golf Course to lead Baldwin to a 188-211 victory in Division I Section 6 against McKeesport.
Rob Hippert and E.J. McFarland each shot a 1-over 37 to pace Upper St. Clair in a 191-221 win against Chartiers Valley at Scenic Valley in Division 1 Section 7.
Matt Vogt shot even par 35 and Dave Roberts shot a 38 at Sylvan Heights to push Seneca Valley to a 196-211 win in Division 1 Section 3 against New Castle.
