On a 12,000-mile journey, he's out to reclaim jet ski world record
Friday, September 07, 2007
After spending the night in Pittsburgh, John Moffatt pilots his Sea-Doo watercraft down the Ohio River yesterday.

John Moffatt is back on the waterways.

Seven years ago, Mr. Moffatt, a former producer for the ABC Show "Full House," traveled 5,604 miles in 80 days on a 12-foot personal watercraft.

He set a world record.

Over time, teams from South Africa and Australia went farther and shattered his record, setting the bar at 10,300 miles.

Now 43, Mr. Moffatt is aiming to reclaim his record by traveling 12,000 miles on a jet ski.

"I know from previous experience what a rigorous and exciting journey this will be. But I am up to the challenge," said Mr. Moffatt, who has sprained every finger at one time or the other and been subjected to hour-long waits along the North American lock system.

Yesterday, his mission had him splashing along the Monongahela River through Pittsburgh, heading toward Wheeling, W.Va.

His journey will end Sunday in Cincinnati.

It began June 8 in Miami and, as of July 10, he was in Detroit, 3,300 miles deep into his attempt to smash the previous mark. He is more than three-quarters of the way done.

As he travels, he is raising awareness for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. His sister suffers from the disease.

Mr. Moffatt quit his job at an insurance agency in Dallas to take the four-month journey, which is being sponsored by Torco Racing Fuels Inc. and Sea-Doo, a watercraft and sport boat company. Mr. Moffatt said he spent about $50,000 out of pocket for his trip in 2000.
